Vendettas apparently aren't entertaining when they happen in real life, when the people involved aren't as morally principled as V, the main character in Alan Moore's series of graphic novels and the Wachowski brothers' movie – and when the butchers' toll includes innocent bystanders.

A lot of things happened in November, but they were all eclipsed by the Maguindanao Massacre, which occurred on the 23rd. The nation and the world watched in horror as bodies were pulled out of a mass grave, and as vehicles buried with the victims showed signs of an ambush. If election violence were a person, he would have reached the pinnacle of his career that day. He probably would have gotten a medal – if not a trophy – from the boss, and become eligible for early retirement.
Because of the killings, the Philippines would probably shoot up on the “most dangerous places for journalists” list. The Ampatuan clan – suspected of masterminding the killings – were put on many people's blacklists, including that of Lakas-Kampi-CMD.
After the slays, people were probably grateful for the distraction that was Manny Pacquiao – he became a prime conversation topic for several weeks after winning a grand victory against Cotto on November 15 in Las Vegas.
Here's to hoping 2010 will still be exciting – for less violent reasons.
