The Detroit Pistons re-signed promising point guard Rodney Stuckey and he is set to get a three-year, 25 million contract. With longtime shooting guard Richard Hamilton no longer with the Pistons, the team is grooming Stuckey as the team’s primary wing player in the coming years. The 25-year old Stuckey averaged 13.6 points and 4.5 assists in four years with the Pistons.
In boxing, rising super middleweight star Andre Ward of the United States defeated Carl Froch of the United Kingdom via unanimous decision to retain his WBA title in the Super Six World Boxing Classic final. Ward fought intelligently by using his vaunted hand speed, which stunned and befuddled Froch all fight long. All three judges saw the fight going Ward’s way by scoring it 118-110, 115-113, and 115-113. The undefeated Ward hasn’t lost a fight since he won the gold medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Lastly, Argentina is looking to host a Formula One race for the first time in 16 years in 2014 once the Velociudad Speedcity is ready. Argentine authorities are expecting the 4.7-km.track to be enough to let the South American country host some of the biggest races in the world. Aside from the Formula One, the Velociudad Speedcity is also expected to hold other big races such as the Le Mans and the MotoGP.
2011 NBA Free Agent News: Stuckey re-signs with Pistons
With longtime shooting guard and former NBA champion Richard Hamilton no longer with the Detroit Pistons, the team made its first step in what could be a long and painful rebuilding period by re-signing promising point guard Rodney Stuckey.
According to reports, the 25-year old restricted free agent just signed a three-year, 25 million dollar contract with the Pistons. Stuckey averaged 15.5 points last season and with the departure of Hamilton, he will be one of the Pistons’ best perimeter players alongside Ben Gordon.
Pistons’ players were involved in a highly publicized drama with former coach John Kuester last season. Most of the players didn’t get along well with Kuester and as a result, he decided to bench some of them. Kuester’s hardline approach didn’t sit well with the players and the messy coach-player relationship showed in how the Pistons played last year. Kuester was eventually replaced by Lawrence Frank.
Stuckey has been in the league for four seasons and has started every game since 2008. Unfortunately, the 6’5 point guard came into a Pistons team that was already in decline. However, there’s a good chance that the 2004 NBA champions will be able to bounce back from an atrocious 2010-2011 season with the help of players such as Damien Wilkins, Tayshaun Prince, Greg Monroe, Charlie Villanueva, and Jonas Jerebko.
Boxing: Ward retains WBA title, beats Froch via unanimous decision
American boxer Andre Ward remains unbeaten after a one-sided beating of Carl Froch of the United Kingdom in the final match of the Super Six World Boxing Classic. With the win, the 27-year old former Olympic gold medalist retained his WBA super middleweight title.
Ward used his quickness and superb combinations to keep the 34-year old Froch at bay. Ward also loaded wicked left hands that wobbled Froch several times during the bout. The American and defending champion was so dominant that all judges saw the fight going for him. Two judges scored it 115-113 while another one scored it 118-110.
With Ward having a huge speed advantage, Froch had to rely on his knockout power in order to have a chance in the fight. Froch was able to land some solid blows in the 10th round, but the American was quick to counter, evading many of Froch’s power punches. In the end, the biggest difference was Ward’s accuracy as he landed 42 percent of his punches as compared to Froch’s woeful 23 percent.
Ward was so impressive in the Super Six Tournament that he was able to defeat former world champions like Froch, Mikkel Kessler, and Arthur Abraham.
Formula One: Argentina looking to host F1
The last time that Argentina hosted a racing event as big as the Formula One was way back in 1998. Once the 4.7-km. Velociudad Speedcity is complete however, the country is expecting the prestigious Formula One Race will be held in Argentina by 2014.
Argentine authorities believe that once the said racing facility is 100 percent complete, all it takes are promoters who can bring back the world’s biggest racing event in the South American country.
The Velociudad Speedcity is a 100 million dollar project and it will include academy that will teach professional racing. Despite the cost, the contractors believe that everything will pay off in time since the racing track is located in Zarate, a place just 100 km. from the capital city Buenos Aires.
Right now, there’s only active F1 track in Argentina and it’s located at the Oscar Alfredo Galvez, a few kilometers from the capital city. Unlike the Velociudad Speedcity, the Oscar Alfredo Galvez racing track isn’t as big and it doesn’t boast the world-class facilities that the Velociudad Speedcity will eventually have.
