Who needs a wedding planner? All a bride-to-be has to do is go to the cinema and be inspired. A movie is an entertaining source of wedding tips. Here’s a guide on how to have a perfect wedding, according to the big screen.

Music: Learn from “The Wedding Singer

Make sure your wedding singer isn’t heartbroken. If he is, make sure he doesn’t carry his heartbreak when he sings for you newlyweds! When Robbie Hart (Adam Sandler) gets jilted at the altar by his fiancé, the next wedding gigs he plays in gets an earful of his whiny, sobbing performances. “Love Stinks” isn’t a song you want played at your reception, do you?

If you’re hiring a band, get their complete playlist. Agree with the band on songs you want played at your ceremony and reception. When Robbie takes a break, he hands the mic over to bandmate George (Alexis Arquette) who then sings the wedding-inappropriate “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?” Twice.

Minister: Learn from “License to Wed

Choose a minister you’re comfortable with. As he’ll be leading the celebration, it’s important to pick a pastor or priest you are confident in and comfortable with. Get to know your minister through pre-cana consultations, which are required by some churches. Reverend Frank (Robin Williams) challenges engaged couple Sadie Jones (Mandy Moore) and Ben Murphy (John Krasinski) with tasks like abstinence till the wedding and taking care of mechanical twins. Think those tasks are invasive? Choose another minister. Are those tasks up your alley? Get someone like Reverend Frank.

Guests: Learn from “Wedding Crashers

Have someone keep a close watch on the guest list to kick out moochers. Security is very important at a wedding. You’ve got a pile of gifts left sitting on a table, and you’ve got a bunch of vulnerable bridesmaids. John Beckwith (Owen Wilson) and Jeremy Grey (Vince Vaughn) crash weddings to meet women and have one night stands.  They bring cover stories to each wedding party they attend and end up charming everyone, even the bride and groom. While quite amusing in the movie, real wedding crashers and could turn out to be dangerous.

Family Involvement: Learn from “My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Listen to your family’s advice but remember that the last say is yours! Toula Portokalos belongs to a traditional Greek family. Upon learning that she is getting married, the whole clan begins throwing advice and worse, planning without consulting her! Her cousin orders undesirable bridesmaid gowns, her father invites the whole church to the wedding, and much more. While it’s assuring to know how much your family cares for your big day, set limits with decision-making. Don’t lose control of your own wedding planning! The buck should stop with the bride and groom!

Bridesmaids’ Attire: Learn from “27 Dresses

Choose your entourage’s gowns thoughtfully. Don’t make your bridesmaids suffer with Little Bo-Peep styles. You may be the star of the day, but that doesn’t mean others should sacrifice on style! Jane Nichols (Katherine Heigl) has had plenty of practice being a bridesmaid. 27 weddings have brought her 27 bridesmaids gowns, none of them she’s able to wear again. That sure eats up a lot of closet space!

Shoes: Learn from “Father of the Bride

Wear comfortable footwear. George Banks (Steve Martin) owns an athletic shoe company. When his daughter Annie (Kimberly Williams) gets married, guess what she wears on her wedding day? Custom-made wedding sneakers!

Overall Wedding Style: Learn from “Sex and the City

Remember that a wedding doesn’t have to be lavish to be celebratory. After a VOGUE shoot, newly engaged Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) receives a gorgeous Vivienne Westwood gown. She decides to wear the luxurious gown at her wedding, which she chooses to hold at the grand New York Public Library. Mr. Big (Chris Noth) begins to have doubts as the extravagance of the wedding preparations intensifies. He’s afraid his fiancée is getting carried away by the concept of a wedding. The end? Carrie gets married at the City Hall in a simple suit she originally bought for the wedding. She and Big later on meet their friends at a diner for a simple celebration.  The simplicity in the celebration, they find, fit them better than a lavish wedding ever could.

Your Groom or Bride: Learn from “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and “Made of Honor

If your spouse-to-be has a best friend of the opposite sex, make sure their relationship is strictly platonic. Julianne Potter (Julia Roberts) is in love with her best friend Michael O’Neil (Dermot Mulroney). Michael is engaged to be married, and his fiancée just asked Julianne to be her maid of honor. On the morning of the wedding day, Julianne is unable to bottle her emotions and tells Michael she’s in love with him. “Marry me. Let me make you happy,” she pleads. She gives him a passionate kiss, one witnessed by Michael’s bride-to-be. Not exactly a good way to start what is supposedly the first day of a new life.

The same thing happens between best friends Tom Bailey Jr. (Patrick Dempsey) and Hannah (Michelle Monaghan). When Hannah goes to Scotland for a business trip, Tom realizes he not only misses his best friend – he’s in love with her. Hannah announces upon her arrival however, that she is engaged to be married to a wealthy Scot named Colin (Kevin McKidd). On the day of the wedding, Tom breaks into the ceremony and announces his love for Hannah. Again, not exactly a good way to start what is supposedly the first day of a new life.

Make sure your fiancé or fiancée’s best friend isn’t out to snatch the love of your life away on your wedding day!

And finally, YOU: Learn from “In and Out” and “Runaway Bride

Be 100% sure you’re ready to get married. Howard Brackett (Kevin Kline) is an English teacher about to get married, but later questions his sexuality when a former student suggests he’s gay. Now that he’s unsure, he begins to feel uncertain about continuing with his wedding. Maggie Carpenter (Julia Roberts) is known as the “Runaway Bride.” She’s jilted three men at the altar because of marriage fears. What a way to break a man’s heart! Spare your spouse-to-be heartbreak by reflecting on your real intentions way before the wedding day.

The movies not only entertains, it sure can inspire one who’s about to get married. What do you need a wedding planner for? All you need are a couple of DVDs, a bucket of popcorn and a comfortable couch. You’re all set to plan your perfect wedding, as inspired by the big screen!
