Former '80s Canadian heartthrob Corey Haim passed away last March 10, Wednesday, at 2:15 a.m. at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 38.
Haim was reported as having flu-like symptoms and was taking over-the-counter medication. “As he got out of bed, he felt a little weak and went down to the floor on his knees,” Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said. His mother found him unresponsive and then called the paramedics.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of his death. ““He could have succumbed to whatever (illness) he had or it could have been drugs,” police Sgt. William Mann said.
A "Lost Boy" indeed, Haim has had a long history of substance-abuse problems. In 2001, he suffered a drug-induced stroke and was treated in UCLA Medical Center. He was also in and out of rehabilitation centers 15 times, after which he claimed he was already off drugs and was ready to make a comeback in Hollywood.
He rose to stardom shortly after the success of his movies The Lost Boys, Dream a Little Dream, Murphy's Romance, and License to Drive, in which he starred with his friend Corey Feldman. The two would later be known as "The Two Coreys," loved and adored by every teenage girl. The two starred in a reality show titled The Two Coreys which aired for two seasons.
Haim received a Viewer's Choice Award nomination at the 22nd Gemini Awards in Canada. He was scheduled to appear in two films slated for release this year, The Pick Up and SAD (Standard American Diet).
“This is a tragic loss of a wonderful, beautiful, tormented soul, who will always be my brother, family, and best friend. We must all take this as a lesson in how we treat the people we share this world with while they are still here to make a difference. I hope the art Corey has left behind will be remembered as the passion of that for which he truly lived," Corey Feldman said.Fans all over the world mourned his passing. “Dream was a favourite movie of mine when I was in my early teens. Corey Haim's death is so sad.” KymKristoffer at twitter said.
His Facebook fan page overflowed with expressions of grief. “
But there were a few who thought Haim had his death coming. A certain mhmjc posted this comment, “ He’s always had drug problems … and well they will catch up with you. RIP Corey Haim may your inner demons finally let you rest.” On this website, a certain tony posted, "People are droppin off like flies in hollywood and it is indeed a shame," referring to the string of drug-induced deaths of famous celebrities. In the same website, someone called mickey posted, "I guess drugs and life expectancy don't get along too well together."
