Jolens to Jolie

jolieJolens was sugar and spice and everything nice. That's right - was.

Jolina Magdangal, more popularly known when she was younger as “Jolens,” started showbiz at a very young age as a member of 14K, Ryan Cayabyab’s musical group. She was the quintessential teenybopper, what with her cute and wholesome roles both on tv and the big screen.

The butterfly

She was recently on hiatus for weeks, giving rise to the speculation that she may be mulling abandoning GMA’s ship.  Then she re-emerged on SOP sporting a totally new look – more sophisticated, Lady Gaga-esque and with a new name to boot - Jolie.

Jolina has also switched managers. Her father, Jun Magdangal, has turned over the reins to Perry Lansigan so the former could focus on the family business. The doting dad admits feeling some separation anxiety, but believes that Lansigan will do a great job with his daughter's career. Perry Lansigan is the talent manager of Dingdong Dantes and Geoff Eigenmann.

Even though Jolina was known as a fashion icon and a trendsetter, many expressed dismay at the revamp of her look and image.  They felt it was not appropriate, and accused her of being a copycat of Hollywood stars Lady Gaga, Madonna and Kylie Minogue.

But she knew this would happen, that her change will not sit well with many. She smiles and takes it all in stride. “Wala akong pakialam sa mga sasabihin nila… Alam mo yun, masarap lang na nag-aayos ka ulit. Ginagawa mo or sinusuot mo ang mga gusto mong suutin (I don’t care what will they say. You know that, you’re just happy that you’re dressing up again. You’re doing and wearing things that you like)."

Her new manager, Perry Lansigan, explains that what they did was just a mish-mash of what Jolina used to do years back. “Dating siya na nagsusuot ng butterfly. Medyas niya magkaiba. Sapatos niya magkaiba. At ang nangyari nun, lahat ng tao sinasabi na baduy siya… Maya-maya halos karamihan ng tao, may headband, may butterfly na… Sabi ko lang, ‘Jolens, kung ano ka dati, ibabalik lang natin.' (She used to wear butterflies, her socks and shoes were different. Everybody thought her style was off. Then most people began wearing headbands with butterflies. So I said, who you were before Jolens, we are just bringing it back.)"

Jolie is now more open to different projects. “Puwede na rin kaming um-accept ng daring roles, sexy pictorials. Hindi na siya yung, ‘Ay, hindi na siya puwedeng magpahalik. Kailangan sa cheeks lang.’ (We are ready to accept daring roles and sexy pictorials. She is not anymore the type who can only be kissed on the cheeks.)"

Hordes of die-hard fans welcome the change and express love for Jolie’s new image. And this is her source of strength and inspiration - supporters who remain loyal to her. “Yun lang siyempre ang importante. (That’s the only thing that is important to me)," she said.

The mag

Jolie has also launched a new project – a style plus pop culture bi-monthly magazine, JOLIE (“pretty” in French). The magazine, headed by Jolie herself,  is about what the modern Jolie represents – a reflection of her stories, her visions and of course, her varied fashion styles.  Published by October Eighty Publications, it will also feature the newest trends on fashion and beauty, as well as the latest dish in showbiz.
