ABS-CBN’s hit reality TV program, “The Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition” is on its last stretch. Only five finalists remain namely Angela Lupangco, Art Mendoza, Hazel Chua, Larry Martin, and Raffy Tan. Known as the “Fab Five”, these final five contestants have survived sixteen weeks of rigorous training and strict diet. Their journey was difficult but determination, courage, blood and sweat have led them this far. The dramatic changes in their appearance attest to that.
During their September 21 press conference, the “Fab Five” expressed their happiness for their achievements and they all vowed to continue their daily workouts now that they have gone back to their homes.
Larry Sienno Galvan Martin
Martin, a former policeman shows the most visible weight loss among the group. His greatest fear is gaining all the weight. He said that the biggest challenge he has to face now is to maintain self-discipline and self-control.
“Ang biggest fear ko is bumalik kami sa dati at tumaba, kasi mawawala naman yung konsensya ko sa sarili ko. Madali ako ma-te-tempt sa mga bagay bagay pag nasa labas na. Kaya talagang wini-workout ko yung sarili ko, panalangin sa Panginoon na sana huwag na bumalik, ganun, iwas sa mga bisyo, ganun,” Martin said.
After losing over a hundred pounds, Larry, a former Police Officer 1 of the Follow up section in the Pasig Police, revealed that he is ready to return to the police force. In fact, he is currently processing his papers to return to police service.
Martin is grateful for the opportunity that the program gave him. He has lost more than 80 pounds. Conquering the challenges and losing all that extra weight has changed his life.
"Yung tiyaga, determinasyon at inspirasyon ng pamilya ko (ang nag push sa akin). Wala talagang imposible pag ginusto mo, sa tulong na din ng Panginoon," Martin said.
"Ako na yung bagong Larry, yung may disiplina at hindi katulad dati na manginginom. Masaya din ako sa nangyari sa buhay ko," he added.
Hazel (Charlene Hazel Yap Chua)
Chua, 22, said that her experience has helped her gain confidence to face life again. She is now able to control her food intake.
“Nung umpisa pa lang ng show, first talaga na pumasok sa isip ko at that time is what if kung tapos na yung show, baka bumalik ako sa dati? Pero habang tumatagal kami sa camp, parang mas nagiging confident kami harapin kung ano yung buhay outside kasi we were taught na maging disiplinado. Kasi yun naman talaga yung naging problema namin, aminado naman kaming lahat na kulang talaga kami sa discipline kaya lumaki kami ng ganun kalaki. So confident kami ngayon na ma-instill sa amin ang discipline na yun,” Chua shared.
"Kahit sino naman sa amin five ang manalo eh panalo na talaga kaming lahat. Minsan lang yung opportunity na ito na mabibigyan ka ng chance na baguhin ang buhay mo at nagpapasalamat kami dun," Chua said.
Raffy (Enrique Rafael Zayco Tan)
Hazel Chua and Raffy Tan said that two wonderful things happened to them when they joined “The Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition”. They both lost considerable weight and found true love inside the camp. The two contestants said that they did not expect to fall in love during the competition but they felt an instant connection between them.
"Nung umpisa pa lang na nakita ko siya eh naisip ko na puwede," Chua said.
She also shared that Tan showed extra sweetness and concern for her during their training days in the camp. They eventually became each other's confidant.
"Since the day na naging close kami, nag-promise na ako sa kanya na tutulungan ko siya hanggang sa huli. Yun din ang dream namin dalawa, na we started this so ang maganda eh we end this together," Tan said.
Tan said that he has never felt as happy as this before. “Like, them yung fear ko is ganun din kasi never pa ako naging ganito ka-happy. Since bata pa ako mataba na ako and everything right now for me, first time. First time ko makabili-bili ng mga damit. First time ko makapunta sa big mall at bibili ng mga large or extra large. Dati kasi four X large. May feeling na sobrang happy ako and ayoko na bumalik kasi bata pa ako ang dami ko ng sakit eh. Ngayon kakatanggal lang ang pangit naman kung ibabalik ko pa,” he said.
Angela (Angela Lupango)
Angela, 26, revealed that she entered the camp so that she could lose weight and have a child with her husband.
“I think everyone naman shares the same sentiments na if ever babalik yung katabaan namin, pero since sobrang intense yung workouts at training namin sa camp, I think makakatulong kung ibibigay na lang sa amin yung mga standees namin from the start of the show para ipaalala sa amin na puwede pa kami bumalik diyan. So yun,” she said.
Art (Arthur Lim Mendoza)
Mendoza, 36, bar owner shares the sentiments of his co-participants. ”The biggest thing na kinakatakutan ko was that my weight would come back. Pero nung natanggap ako sa show, sinabi ko sa sarili ko, I will not look at this as a goal. I will look at this as a lifestyle. So ngayon, paglabas ko, alam ko hindi kaya ng lifestyle ko yung four to five hours na gym time. So anong pinaka-naturo nila coach Chinggay (Andrada) and coach Jim (Saret) na ina-apply ko? Now I probably workout about an hour to an hour and a half. So kaya ko na baguhin yung lifestyle ko,” he said.
First Pinoy Big Loser to be revealed soon
There will be a final weigh-in during the Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition finale to determine who among “The Fab Five” have lost the highest weight percentage. The very first Pinoy Biggest Loser will be declared on October 8 at the Ynares Stadium.

2nd Place- P500,000, Vespa scooter, Whirlpool appliances, and 1 year fitness first membership.
3rd Place- P300,000, Vespa scooter, Fujidenzo appliances, and 1 year fitness first membership.
At Home Winner - P200,000 and 1 year fitness first membership.
