This summer, moviegoers can look forward to an exciting lineup of movies hitting the cinemas in April and May. Whether action fantasy, action adventure, comedy or animation, here are interesting summer movie picks that you can enjoy watching while feasting on your favorite popcorn.
Thor
Those who watched the after-credits scene of Iron Man 2 were treated to a glimpse of upcoming movie Thor. In the trailer, a giant crater was discovered where a huge stone hammer lies. The mysterious hammer is called Mjolnir and it belongs to Thor, a Norse god. Written on it are the words “Whoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy shall possess the power of … Thor.”
After the success of Iron Man 2, Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment present Thor, the movie adaptation of the Marvel comics. This epic adventure movie is set to hit movie theaters on May 6 in 2D and 3D. The story revolves around a mighty but arrogant warrior named Thor, who traverses the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the domain of Asgard. His careless and domineering behavior causes another ancient battle, leading his father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins) to cast him down to earth. Thor, stripped of his power, is forced to live among human beings.
The role of Thor, also known as the god of thunder, is played by Australian actor Chris Hemsworth. The hammer-swinging god meets a young and beautiful scientist named Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who becomes his first love. Thor’s time spent on Earth opens his eyes to the plight of humans. He discovers what it takes to become a real hero when he faces a dangerous adversary sent by the darkest forces of Asgard to attack Earth.
Thor also stars Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Colm Feore as Ymir, Jaimie Alexander as Sif and Stellan Skarsgard as Professor Andrews. The movie is given a rating of PG-13 for sequences of intense sci-fi action and violence. The movie is directed by Kenneth Branagh.
Bridesmaids
The moment a woman becomes engaged, she sets off to spread the happy news to her family and friends. The bride-to-be usually assigns her closest friends to be her bridesmaids while the role of the maid of honor is often given to a sibling or best friend. The bridesmaids and maid of honor often organize the bridal shower and bachelorette party in honor of the bride.
This summer, Universal is presenting a romantic comedy entitled Bridesmaids. It is about a simple Midwestern girl named Annie (Kristen Wiig) who was asked by her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) to become her maid of honor. Annie finds herself in an odd situation as she tries to please the rich and snobbish bridesmaids during pre-wedding events. The story is written by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo.
The cast of Bridesmaids include Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Jon Hamm, Dianne Wiest, Matthew Lucas, Chris O'Dowd, Ellie Kemper, Melissa McCarthy and Wendy McLendon-Covey. This hilarious film is directed by Paul Feig. It is bound to hit theaters on May 13.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is part of the successful franchise. Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Captain Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) are out on an adventurous quest to locate the fountain of youth. Soon they find out that Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and his daughter are after the same thing.
Sparrow meets the beautiful and mysterious Angelica (Penelope Cruz), and finds himself in a predicament. He can't be certain if it’s love or if she’s a con artist trying to use him in order to find the fountain of youth.
Angelica forces Sparrow to board Queen Anne's Revenge, Blackbeard's ship, and they take on an unplanned adventure. Sparrow doesn’t know if he should be more afraid of Blackbeard or Angelica.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall. The movie will set sail on May 20 in 2D and 3D.
The Hangover 2
The hit comedy The Hangover is back with a sequel. In Hangover 2, Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Doug (Justin Bartha) head to Thailand for Stu's wedding. The boys set up an unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas. After that wild night, Stu decides to play it safe by having a simple and quiet wedding brunch. But things don’t always turn out the way they are planned. Misadventures seem to follow the gang.
Award-winning actor Liam Neeson was supposed to have a cameo role in the film. He was pegged to appear as a tattoo artist; however the scene was removed during the editing process when the director did some reshoots. Neeson was busy filming another movie which forced the director to change the scene that included him. Mel Gibson was formerly cast for the role but it didn’t push through when the cast members aired their objections. Nick Cassavetes finally ended up with the role.
The hilarious movie is directed by Todd Phillips. Moviegoers can see the funny gang again on May 26.
