Newbies win big at the Palancas

carlos_palanca_award_logo.jpgThe recipients of 59th Carlos Palanca Awards were honored on September 1, 2009 at the Manila Peninsula Hotel in Makati. In addition to the winners for their standard categories of Best Short Fiction, Short Fiction for Children, Poetry, Essay, and Screenplay, the awards also welcomed a new category, Poetry for Children.

Guest of Honor Bienvenido Lumbera, this years's recipient of the Gawad Dangal ng Lahi gave a blistering speech referring to the recent National Artist scandal. Director and comics-writer Carlo J. Caparas was also present in the event as a judge for the Dulang Pampelikula (Screenplay) category.

Professors Reuel Molina Aguila and Eugene Y. Evasco were inducted into the Hall of Fame, a distinction given to individuals who have won five first prizes in the annual Palanca Awards.

The program featured live readings of the winning entries for Poetry Written for Children in English and Tagalog, read by Mica Roi B. Torre and Richelle Ann S. Lim under the direction of Alfred A. Yuson, followed by a presentation of the 3rd place one-act play winner Asunto written by Jose Dennis C. Teodisio and directed by Rosauro "Uro" dela Cruz, with the characters played by Lou Veloso, Soxy Topacio, Robert Seña, Alexander Cortez, and Ricky Davao.

The first place winners in each category are as follows:

"Home of the Sierra Madre" by Sigfredo R. Iñigo (Short Story)

"Mahabang-Mahabang-Mahaba" by Genaro R. Gojo Cruz (Maikling Kwentong Pambata) "Apolinario and the Name Trader" by Kathleen Aton-Osias (Short Story for Children)

"The Collapse of What Separates Us" by Vincenz Serrano (Poetry)
"Ilang Sandali Makalipas Ang Huling Araw ng Mundo" by Reagan R. Maiquez (Tula)
"May Tiyanak Sa Loob Ng Aking Bag" by Eugene Y. Evasco (Tulang Isinulat Para sa Mga Bata)
"The Google Song and Other Rhymes for Children" by Edgardo B. Maranan (Poetry Written for Children)

"Nguni't Wala Akong Litrato Noong Nasa Kolehiyo Ako" by Raul Molina Aguila (Sanaysay)
"A Passage Through the Storm" by Edgardo B. Maranan (Essay)

Doc Resureccion: Gagamutin Ang Bayan by Layeta Bucoy (Dulang May Isang Yugto)
Ismail at Isabel by Rodolfo C. Vera (Dulang Ganap ng Haba)
Hiwaga by Seymour Barros Sanchez and Christian M. Lacuesta (Dulang Pampelikula)

"Sugmat" by Corazon M. Almerino (Short Story, Cebuano)
"Vigan" by Danilo B. Antalan (Short Story, Iluko)
"Kanamit Gid Sang Arroz Valenciana" by Ferdinand Balino (Short Story, Hiligaynon)

"Si Ate Elsa, Si Ate Carmen, at Ako Laban Sa Mga Nangungunang Bansa Sa Mundo" by Axcel L. Trinidad (Sanaysay, Kabataan Division)
"The Benefits of Selflessness by Cristina Gartia T. Tantengco" (Essay, Kabataan Division).
