The much ado about nothing death grip saga continues

Yesterday, we published a statement by Research and Motion's CEOs saying that Apple was being disingenuous.   It was most certainly something they had to say.  Legally, they needed to dot the I's and cross the T's, right?

Heaven forbid someone is actually right on these Internets.  You know?

Over at Engadget they published a piece from Nokia, "We prioritize antenna performance over physical design if they are ever in conflict."  Let's face it, you LOL'd at that statement, didn't you?

If you read Consumer Reports they gave iPhone a thumbs up.  Citing it is the best phone there is out there, even in spite of the occasional signal drop.  And yet, they continue to say, they are not recommending the phone.

It is just hilarious not to recommend the best phone in the market.  What's up with that?

The entire hoopla over this non-issue is like trying to figure out if the Chicken came before the Egg, which by the way, the answer to that little conundrum has been settled.

John Gruber talked about 'Bars' as a unit of measure, responding to a post by Aaron Swartz.  In it Gruber mentioned that may be the reason why Apple talked about 'bars' is because that's what people use as a metric, arbitrary number as it is.

Apple revealed during their July 16 press conference the number of people who complained about antenna or reception problems.  Only 0.55 percent of the 3 million people who have bought iPhone did so.

Marketwatch quoted Jobs saying,

"You know, most of the customers that have iPhone 4s think it is the coolest thing they ever owned," he said, adding that, to the customers who are having problems, "I apologize to them."

Over at Macworld, Jason Snell talked about inside Apple's once and now, not so secret wireless lab:

“The existence of this lab used to be secret,” an Apple PR representative pointed out. “Now it’s not.” Not since Steve Jobs showed detailed pictures of it to members of the press a few hours earlier, anyway. Apple has since also posted a page about its testing methods, including a video overview.

Apple’s wireless lab has 16 different anechoic chambers—think of them as bank vaults, padded with foam shaped into pointy cones to stop all reflections, designed to create completely radio-neutral environments—at a cost Caballero estimated at $1.2 million per chamber."

The tour, as Snell reported was really about Apple showing the world how serious they make these devices and what sort of engineering takes place.

In all this mess, Boy Genius Report asked, "Can you make your current phone lose signal depending on how you hold it?"

The video proves you can.  It proves that Consumer Report's reputation isn't worth much salt these days.  RIM's and Nokia's statements are likewise about shooting themselves in the foot.

Maybe we should all just sing the iPhone Antenna Song.  Scobleizer makes a great point, in Arrogance or Artistry, "Build a better phone if you think iPhone 4 is crap."  The whole mess of Antennagate is much ado about nothing.
