Samsung posts Q1 revenue but phone shipments down

SamsungSamsung has posted its financial report for the first quarter of 2010, and the company as a whole earned 36.64 South Korean Won (US $31 million) in revenue. That is a 21 percent increase compared to the number from the same quarter last year. Phone shipments for the telecommunications division however went down to 64.3 million handsets, down from 69 million in the previous quarter. The division still posted a profit of 1.10 trillion KRW ($987 million) on revenue of 9.18 trillion KRW ($8.23 billion). The company says it plans to launch more phones running Google’s Android OS as well as more phones running their proprietary Bada OS.

As for specific numbers, Samsung says half of the smartphones they will launch this year will run Android while a third will run Bada. The rest will probably run Windows Phone 7. If you remember, Microsoft used a modified Samsung i8910 (originally Symbian-powered) when it presented Windows Phone 7 to the world a couple of months ago because Samsung is one of Microsoft’s partners for its new mobile OS. So far, the company has released several Android handsets, though none have been as popular or as successful as say the Droid or most of HTC’s devices. Only one Bada handset has been announced, the Wave, but more are in the pipeline and set for release soon as well. No Windows Phone 7 devices have been officially announced as of yet, but the OS is slated for release before the year ends so something should be announced soon.

In other news, the 3G Apple iPad has already been jailbroken, just like its Wi-Fi-only counterpart. The iPhone Dev Team have hacked one such tablet and allowed it to send SMS. It’s very primitive, working at the command-line only, but the important thing is it works. Watch the video yourself and you can see that it is legit.

The Apple iPhone has now become the number one Opera Mini device in the US in terms of installs. The iPhone surpassed BlackBerry which previously held the top spot. We told you about how fast the browser is and how much potential it had and it seems people in the US have noticed the same things. The iPhone is also number one in the UK, and is in strong positions in other countries such as Australia, Canada, and Japan. Globally, the iPhone has risen to third place where it is surrounded by a bunch of Nokia and Sony Ericsson handsets. It looks like Opera Mini is really giving mobile Safari a run for its money.

Remember the rumored Motorola Shadow? Well, we may finally have seen live pictures of it. According to the folks at laptopmemo, a new Motorola phone known as the MB810 received certification from the Wi-Fi Alliance. They previously received information that the Shadow IS indeed the MB810. Rumored specs include a large 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen, Android 2.2 (Froyo), and 8-megapixel camera with HD video-recording capability, and an HDMI-out. Live (but blurry) pictures show a phone that looks similar to the renders of the Shadow that we have seen before. We can see the HDMI-out and the 8-megapixel camera in the pictures as well. We hope Moto announces this thing officially, and soon.
