We had just been talking about the huge number of gadget leaks that we have seen recently, and today we’ve got more. This time, it’s Dell’s future smartphone lineup and it’s looking pretty good. Design-wise and specs-wise, Dell’s upcoming phones show a lot of promise. There are three new Android phones (in different form factors and with different specs) and one Windows Phone 7 handset (which could be one of the launch devices for Microsoft’s new mobile OS). Dell was late to the smartphone party, but if these come out as good they seem on paper, they could really make a killing.
First up is the Dell Flash. The Flash is expected to come out with the latest version of Android (Froyo) running on an 800 MHz Qualcomm MSM7230 (part of Qualcomm’s new lineup of mid-tier cores for smartphones). The most interesting aspect of the phone is the design. Dell is reportedly going to make this phone using a slice of “curved glass.” If the actual phones come out looking as good as the renders, then Dell’s definitely got a winner here. It’s a very good-looking phone with the specs to match its slick looks.
Next is the Smoke. It’s another Android handset and like the Flash it is expected to come out with Froyo. Unlike the Flash which is a full touchscreen device, the Smoke is a QWERTY candybar like the Palm Pixi and most BlackBerry smartphones. Based on the renders though, the Smoke looks taller and narrower than any device from RIM. It’s also probably more powerful as it will also use the 800 MHz Qualcomm MSM7230 like its Flash cousin. With the form factor, it seems Dell is targeting the suits with this one.
The last of the Android bunch is the Thunder. It is probably going to be Dell’s flagship Android phone, with a huge 4.1-inch WVGA OLED screen. No details were released about what will power the Thunder, but we guess it’s safe to assume it will use the snappy 1GHz Snapdragon processor that’s quickly becoming the norm for high-end smartphones these days. It reportedly has Dell’s custom interface on top of Android 2.1 (why this one will run 2.1 while the other two will come pre-loaded with Froyo, we cannot understand. It could be because this will be available first, hence Froyo won’t be out yet, but we can only speculate). The HSDPA version should be out before the year ends, but there will be an LTE version that should come out sometime next year.
Finally, we have the Lightning. It’s the only one that will have Windows Phone 7 on board, and it looks promising. It’s a vertical slider like the Palm Pre, but the design is edgier and a lot more modern. The specs are what you would expect from a modern high-end smartphone: Snapdragon processor, 4.1-inch WVGA OLED screen, GPS, and many others. It will also have full Flash support that should allow users to play videos from most sites. It will reportedly be available before the year ends, which could mean that it will be one of the launch devices for Windows Phone 7. Like the Thunder, a more future-proof LTE version is slated to come out next year.
