If four cores aren’t enough, Intel has just introduced its latest processor, the Core i7-980X Extreme edition processor. It actually has six physical cores and is the first six-core processor that Intel has released. The best part is, it’ll be offered at the same price as the four core i7-975!
The i7-980C uses the same nm (nanometer) process technology. Basically, the idea of this technology is that, the smaller, the better.
Hothardware.com, says it’s the fastest desktop processor they have tested . It has a shared L3 cache of 12MB and AES-NI Hyperthreading as well.
Stickybits
Ever heard of stickybits? Well SocialMedia has released this ingenious way of tagging objects. Its basically a unique identifier for something you find interesting. You buy a pack, of stickybits, well essentially these are just stickers with barcodes printed on them, stick them on something (or someone) that you want to remember, comment on or whatever, then you take a photo of it using the stickybits app (now available for the iPhone and Android). Then you can “tag” it with comments, photos or whatever it is you want, you can even tag its location. Then whoever else sees it and takes a photo of it can also tag and comment on the same barcode.
It’s a good idea really, since it promotes interaction and actual contact before you can tag. But I don’t know, knowing the kind of pranksters people are, you might just find one on some old artifact in a museum, just because somebody stuck it there so he can tag it.
New hard disk and Windows XP
Up next, if you’re looking to buy the latest top-of-the-line hard disk, you might want to reconsider your operating system. I personally still use Windows XP, simply because I think Windows Vista is a piece of trash and I can’t afford to upgrade to Windows 7 yet, but, using windows XP might just limit the type of harddrives that I can use. According to arstechnica, the next harddisk generation will most likely cause slowdowns in systems utilizing windows XP.
The problem is in the harddisk sectors, (I won’t explain what sectors are but if you want to know more you can read this article). The standard is 512, but next generation harddisks will now be employing 4096-byte sectors which matches the standard size allocation units of NTFS. So basically, reading the same amount of data (for XP) will need more processing resources to compensate for the change.
Gates not the richest
Here’s some news, Forbes Magazine released its list of the world’s richest people, and Bill Gates is only second! For the second time in history, Bill Gates was edged by another person. This person, Carlos Slim, a Mexican telecom mogul only edged gates by $500 million. In addition, Forbes’ Matthew Milelr estimated that if Gates wasn’t such an extensive philanthropist, he would have netted $80 million. Imagine that.
.xxx domain
Some people are rethinking the dot-xxx high level domain. The .xxx domain was supposed to be some sort of red light district for the internet where adult sites can set up their business but keep the sites from the prying eyes of the underaged. Last 2007, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) rejected this proposal and the rejection is now being questioned and will be discussed in the ICANN meeting this week at Nairobi, Kenya.
