Hope for scratched iPhones, Microsoft’s future in the mobile world

Before and AfterUsing an iPhone without a protective case of some sort is a huge pain. After a few months, scratches inevitably appear on that shiny back, and let’s face it nobody wants a scratched-up piece of hardware. Luckily, the folks over at HacknMod have found a way to remove the scratches and give the iPhone that brand-new shine without having to replace anything. All that’s needed is a little elbow grease, some sandpaper, and a few other household items and the scratches go bye-bye. What’s great about this technique is that it can be used for other gadgets and not just the iPhone. Score one for DIYers all over the world.

From the iPhone, we go to Windows Mobile or Windows Phone as it is now known. It’s obvious that gaming will be a big story with Windows Phone 7 Series (what with Xbox Live integration and all), and a Microsoft executive has pretty much confirmed that. The company has also officially confirmed that WP 7 Series is a completely clean break from the old Windows Mobile which means that apps for WinMo 6.x won’t work for WP 7. Not all is lost for 6.x owners and developers though as Microsoft has said that they will support the mobile OS and its partners who still use the OS in their products.

Speaking of Microsoft and mobile phones, it seems the company’s acquisition of Danger (maker of the famed Sidekick of old) really meant a Microsoft branded phone will be released soon. The folks over at Gizmodo have gotten their hands on some blurry pictures of the oft-rumored Microsoft Project Pink Phones, the Pure and the Turtle. The phones don’t seem to run WP 7 Series, but rather a feature phone OS with hints of WP 7 Series’ user interface. Things are looking mighty exciting for Microsoft’s mobile devices now.

Remember earlier this week when it was reported that Topeka, Kansas changed its name to Google, Kansas for the entire month of March in an attempt to get Google’s Gigabit Fiber Internet? Well, the Mayor of Duluth, Minnesota wants to one-up Topeka by announcing that all firstborn children shall be named Google. Well, actually, not really. It’s a parody, and it’s really funny. It just shows the absurdity of what Topeka did.

We go to Taiwan now, where VMAX Telecom has given us another reason to be envious of Taipei aside from Taipei 101. A 1,000-strong fleet of Wi-max equipped cabs was recently launched to serve the city’s commuters and their mobile broadband needs. And the best thing about it is that it will be free of charge. At least for now, as the company has not yet decided if and when it will charge for the service. Still though, Wi-max in a cab! Why can’t we have that here!?

Finally, we close today with the possibility of faster gadgets that consume less energy. Researchers at IBM have replaced copper wiring with electron and proton avalanches, transmitting data at the nanophotonic level. Could this be the future of electronics? We shall see.
