Measles outbreak declared in MM areas, 3 other provinces

The number of reported cases of measles since January 1, 2010 is now at 699, according to a report on the Manila Times website.

Moreover, measles outbreaks have been declared in six areas: Baseco Compound and Moriones in Tondo, Manila; Barangay Pulang Lupa in Las Piñas City; Central Market in Dasmariñas, Cavite; San Francisco, Quezon; and Balabagan, Lanao del Sur.

As a result, the Department of Health (DOH) intensified its measles vaccination campaign among children aged nine months to one year. Children aged 12 to 15 months who have been previously given the measles vaccine are also being revaccinated to ensure continued protection against the viral disease.

The vaccine is routinely given for free at health centers nationwide as part of the government’s immunization program.

Measles, also called rubeola, is a viral infection that has an incubation period of eight to 12 days before the symptoms appear. It is characterized initially by fever, body weakness, irritability, red eyes, cough and runny nose. A skin rash appears one to eight days later, first on the forehead and spreading downward over the face, neck and trunk.

Complications of measles include middle ear infection (otitis media), diarrhea, bronchitis, pneumonia, and, in extreme cases, encephalitis. Individuals with pre-existing conditions and nutritional deficiencies are at greater risk of developing complications once infected with measles. Death is the most serious consequence, with fatality rates in developing countries reaching as high as 28%.

Measles is highly contagious, spreading through transfer of nasal and cough secretions either directly or through the air (airborne). A person infected with the virus can transmit the disease as early as five days after exposure and up to five days after the skin rashes have appeared. Therefore, isolation during this period is highly advised.
