Two weeks ago, we started a vigil for peaceful and honest elections. Four days ago, one of us began a hunger strike for the same intention. Although violence erupted in a few places, the overall picture was that of peace. Peace has triumphed. Peace has won. But this is just another chapter in our history as a nation. Much remains to be done. We must remain vigilant and watch our new leaders. We must remain united, organized, networked, and proactive in the next six years of the new administration. For these reasons, we light candles outside Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) tonight at 6:00 p.m.
Let us keep the fire burning. Let not “ningas cogon” take over after this most important exercise and celebration of our freedom. We cannot walk away and as usual, let our new leaders run the affairs of state without us. Together as we light and hold up our candles, we pray that we will continue to see the persistent challenges for all of us, especially our leaders, that they may govern selflessly and ethically, willing to walk with and immerse in the life of their people, most especially the poor.
