We are all responsible for one another!

forpnoyparokyaWe cannot deny our responsibility as a people for what happened last Monday as much as Hong Kong citizens cannot deny their anger and grief. Denial kills and leads to further violence. In as much as we must respect and acknowledge the anger and grief of the Hong Kong people, we too must humbly and courageously admit our responsibility.

We have often sung a song whose refrain is, “Tayong Lahat Ay May Pananagutan Sa Isa’t-isa.” (We Are All Responsible For Each Other)

We are responsible, both government and citizens of the Republic of the Philippines for the violent deaths of innocent Hong Kong citizens.

We are responsible for addressing and removing the roots of violence in our society and its varied manifestations, even in crisis management; culture; politics; economics; media; business, etc.

We are responsible, thus, we will stop blaming others and help one another learn from our mistakes; make amends for these in order to restore each other’s dignity as persons and Overseas Filipino Workers.

We are responsible and we will express our deepest sympathies and solidarity to the Hong Kong people and do so through concrete and public ways.

We are responsible and will stand by our fellow OFWs who may suffer the violence of abuse and discrimination as a consequence of the Manila Hostage Taking.

We are also responsible for creating a culture and environment of peace, justice and compassion both in Hong Kong and the Philippines. Each Filipino, wherever she/he is, is responsible for her country and people. She/he is responsible for her neighbors both at home and abroad.

As we strive to be aware of the depth and breadth of our responsibility as fellow Filipinos and visitors in a foreign land, we do so in prayerful and humble silence, allowing the music to console the grieving and lift up the broken... “Tayong lahat ay may pananagutan sa isa’t-isa….”

But what about Mendoza, where is his guilt? And there are two Mendozas --- they do not share equally the guilt and culpability but they both have responsibility the elder who killed people and the younger. Do they not?

What about Magtibay, what failures should he acknowledge? What about Puno, did he or didn't he make serious mistakes like abandoning the post? What about Lim? What about Lacierda and Coloma? What about Noynoy Aquino?

Each Filipino, wherever she/he is, is responsible for her country and people but focus and attention to appropriateness is needed. Hindi lahat, pare-pareho. The farmers in Ilocos Sur and the farmers of Bukidnon do not have responsibility over Quirino grandstand as much as Robredo, do they? Without focus by a vigilant citizenry, the incompetents and the lazy get away with murder, and they should not even if they should LABAN!!

Yes, well said...and it is the responsibility of a concerned and critical citizenry to voice out the responsibility and even guilt of those who may have failed to carry out their responsibility....there is just the danger of those who make facile judgments on others' responsibility or guilt without thinking of his/her own positive or negative contribution....there are the reckless mirons and uzis of Luneta...there are also similar types who watch passively from their armchairs...we need to engage more proactively and indeed, critically when called for...

Roberto,

This was a long time coming. We have much to talk about, including my fallen brother, Ernest.

Fr. Roberto,

I remember meeting you at our home in Sampaloc. I knew my dad as being a ret. Captain from Kings Point rather than the colonel I have been hearing lately.

My Dad did ask about you when he was here in the States. I was curious at first till now. When you have time away from your busy schedule, lets talk.

You have my email address.
