According to the post entitled "Heartburn Over Two Big Meals," Arroyo and her group dined at at Bobby Van's Steakhouse in Washington DC. They "took over one of the restaurant's private rooms and dined on lobster, steak and fine wines; at the conclusion of the meal, an unidentified woman opened a handbag stuffed with cash, counted out bills and paid the $15,000 tab -- which included a generous tip." The dinner reportedly took place after Arroyo met with US President Barack Obama.
Quezon Representative Danilo Suarez confirmed that they dined at the steakhouse. "I doubt if you will spend that much there. Parang Italianni's yan e (It's just like Italianni's)," he told gmanews.tv. He did not confirm the identity of the person who paid for the alleged $15,000 bill.
"So lavish, the money spent on this second dinner alone could have fed one poor family living with less than a dollar a day for the next 41 years!!....sad story," commented juliusduenas1.
"As private individuals, they could wine and dine all they want, especially if the money didn't come from taxpayers. But given the economic status of our country, then wining and dining is something that seems out of moral bounds," said user AisadelaCruz.
Last week, a New York Post article reported that Arroyo and her entourage had a $20,000 dinner at the French restaurant Le Cirque in New York City.
According to a Saksi news report, AKBAYAN party list representatives Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel and Walden Bello filed a case before the Ombudsman against Arroyo and some officials in connection to the 20,000 New York dinner, saying Arroyo's group went against the code of conduct and ethical standards. AKBAYAN filed the complaint before the Washington Post blog was posted.
