In
partnership with the Cordillera Studies Center of UP Baguio, the
Commission on Higher Education, IP Philippines,
Manila Bulletin,
Central Book Supply, Fuji Xerox Philippines, and Anvil Publishing,
the
National Book Development Board (NBDB) is holding a two-day
academic publishing conference at the University of the Philippines
Baguio for today's celebration of World Book and Copyright Day. It is
specially for universities, university-based and commercial
publishers in the country with the
aim
of "recognizing the importance of books for the development of
quality education through publishing." It will also showcase
books of different publishers and printers in a mini book fair.
Yesterday,
guest speakers spoke on a variety of subjects. Dr. Luisa T. Camagay,
director of UP Press, talked about
"The
UP Press experience, its best practices, and an introduction to the
Philippine Association of Scholarly and Academic Publishers (PASAP)."
Dr. Oscar Campomanes of Ateneo de Manila University spoke on
"The
basics of writing articles and the journal review process."
Prof. J. Neil Garcia, a poet from UP Diliman, talked about
"Refereed
journals and the general organization of a journal article."
Dr. Isagani Cruz of De La Salle University Press spoke on
"Best
practices and alternative selling techniques for academic and
scholarly books." Today, Dr. Colin Leslie Day, director of
Hongkong University Press, leads the line up of speakers by talking
about "E-publishing for academic and scholarly publishers."
Following her are Atty.
Louie Calvario of IP Philippines who tackles copyright issues and the
importance of copyright policies, as well as
Anvil
Publishing's Gwenn Jessica Galvez, Central Books Supply's Jose Paolo
Sibal, Fuji Xerox Philippines' Ricky Muñoz,
and Filipinas Copyright Licensing Society's Alvin Buenaventura, who
will share their experiences and the latest trends and
practices in publishing.
The conference's
moderators are Andrea Pasion-Flores and Frances Jeanne Sarmiento,
Executive Director and Deputy Executive Director of NBDB.
This
is the second conference on academic publishing organized by NBDB,
following the first one in 2007 which gathered the biggest
university-based publishers in the country.
