world_book_day_2009_small_copy2.jpg In partnership with the Cordillera Studies Center of UP Baguio, the Commission on Higher Education, IP Philippines, Manila Bulletin, Central Book Supply, Fuji Xerox Philippines, and Anvil Publishing, the National Book Development Board (NBDB) is holding a two-day academic publishing conference at the University of the Philippines Baguio for today's celebration of World Book and Copyright Day. It is specially for universities, university-based and commercial publishers in the country with the aim of "recognizing the importance of books for the development of quality education through publishing." It will also showcase books of different publishers and printers in a mini book fair.

Yesterday, guest speakers spoke on a variety of subjects. Dr. Luisa T. Camagay, director of UP Press, talked about "The UP Press experience, its best practices, and an introduction to the Philippine Association of Scholarly and Academic Publishers (PASAP)." Dr. Oscar Campomanes of Ateneo de Manila University spoke on "The basics of writing articles and the journal review process." Prof. J. Neil Garcia, a poet from UP Diliman, talked about "Refereed journals and the general organization of a journal article." Dr. Isagani Cruz of De La Salle University Press spoke on "Best practices and alternative selling techniques for academic and scholarly books." Today, Dr. Colin Leslie Day, director of Hongkong University Press, leads the line up of speakers by talking about "E-publishing for academic and scholarly publishers." Following her are Atty. Louie Calvario of IP Philippines who tackles copyright issues and the importance of copyright policies, as well as Anvil Publishing's Gwenn Jessica Galvez, Central Books Supply's Jose Paolo Sibal, Fuji Xerox Philippines' Ricky Muñoz, and Filipinas Copyright Licensing Society's Alvin Buenaventura, who will share their experiences and the latest trends and practices in publishing.

The conference's moderators are Andrea Pasion-Flores and Frances Jeanne Sarmiento, Executive Director and Deputy Executive Director of NBDB.

This is the second conference on academic publishing organized by NBDB, following the first one in 2007 which gathered the biggest university-based publishers in the country.
