Lesbians and gays are now widespread in the community. You can find them in parks, clubs, schools, television programs and even in movies. They are also the common scenes in shows and performances. But, are they really accepted by the society?
Consensus shows that homosexuality occurs in 3 to 5 percent of the world population (http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/979022). However, in the Philippines, the number is quickly rising due to influences and other reasons.
Some bisexual experience discrimination and they feel that they do not belong so, they have a tendency to be “invisible”, in public and they commit in forming their own communities, culture, and political movements (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality).
In the country, Filipinos call themselves open-minded. That’s why, festivals with gays and lesbians as highlights are well-celebrated. There are also events that show the acceptance of the community such as the Manila Pride March (http://www.utopia-asia.com/spec/ppride09.htm).

Meanwhile, in the Millennium Development Summit held in 2000, to promote gender equality was one of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to be achieved by 2015. Its target is to eliminate primary and secondary education preferably by 2015 (http://www.undp.org/mdg/goal3.shtml).
