Jesus said to his disciples, "Be
on your guard with respect to people, for they will hand you over to
their courts and they will flog you in their synagogues. You will be
brought to trial before rulers and kings because of me, and so you
may witness to them and the pagans. But when you are arrested, do not
worry about what you are to say and how you are to say it; when the
hour comes, you will be given what you are to say. For it is not you
who will speak; but it will be the Spirit of your Father in you."
Mt. 10:17-22

There was a prophetess named Anna,
daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. After leaving her
father's home, she had been seven years with her husband, and since
then she had been continually about the Temple, serving God as a
widow night and day in fasting and prayer. She was now eighty-four.
Coming up at that time, she gave praise to God and spoke of the child
to all who looked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem.
Lk
2:36-40

Zechariah, filled with the holy
spirit, sang this canticle, "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for
he has come and redeemed his people. He has raised up for us a
victorious Savior in the house of David his servant, as he promised
through the prophets of old..."
Luke 1: 67-79

When the day for the
purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought the baby up
to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, as it is written in the law
of the Lord: Every firstborn male shall be consecrated to God. And
they offered a sacrifice as ordered in the law of the Lord: a pair of
turtledoves or two young pigeons.
Luke 2:22-35

I look back to my three Christmases from 2006 to the
present. It is, in minuscule, the story of my life so far. Christmas in 2006
was in China.
I remember that evening when I walked on dark streets, through a dark alley to
reach a church carefully hidden. Before the Cultural Revolution in China, the
Catholic Church literally went underground. During the Cultural Revolution, it
was even worst. The China
I experienced almost three years ago was gradually recovering from the negative
effects of the Cultural Revolution. It was also recovering from the June 4,
1989 experience at Tiananmen Square. The
distrust of foreigners and the deep suspicion of religions still pervaded much
of China.
Only the patriotic church was tolerated. That Christmas Eve, I was with a group
of friends to attend a 10:00 p.m. mass. The church was crowded and we were one
of the last allowed to enter, lucky to find seats at the back. After a few
minutes, the front doors were closed by men who kept guard the whole time. From
the time the doors were closed, throughout the entire mass, people who wanted
to enter kept pounding the door. People inside, the bishop celebrating the mass
included did not seem to mind. It was a sad and noisy mass in a dimly lit and
cold church. This does not say everything about my life in China then, but
it says something worth pondering and remembering.

Zechariah asked for a
writing tablet and wrote on it, "His name is John," and
they were very surprised. Immediately Zechariah could speak again and
his first words were in praise of God.
