santa_claus.jpgAround 220 policemen wearing red Santa Claus hats were deployed in malls and other crowded places such as markets and transport terminals throughout Metro Manila beginning Tuesday, 2 December 2008, and lasting until 2 January 2009, says the Philippine Star.
The "Santa cops" are part of the yearly program of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) to enforce peace and security across the metropolis during the Christmas rush, according to Inquirer.net. NCRPO chief Director Leopoldo Bataoil said that policemen who would wear Santa costumes would not be carrying sidearms so as to be "friendlier" to the people around.

The policemen would be deployed in Quiapo, Baclaran, Divisoria, Litex-Commonwealth, and Barangay Bagong Silang (Caloocan), says the Philippine Star. "Santa cops" would also be visible in Araneta Center and Monumento, adds Inquirer.net.

The program had a positive impact in the preceding years on the crime-monitoring activities of policemen, said Bataoil, who was quoted by the Philippine Star as saying "Street crimes [shoplifting, pickpocketing and cell phone snatching] have been proliferating. It is during October and November where we observe crime rate getting high. During the first week of December, crime rate is still somehow high, though towards the second week, it will be minimized." Bataoil credited the program with a significant drop (31%) of crime incidents in 2007 as compared to 2006 records.

Bataoil also warned the policemen about soliciting from pedestrians or motorists, states Inquirer.net. "Pwede silang bumati. Hindi sila pwedeng mamasko [They can greet. They can't ask for Christmas gifts.]," Bataoil said.

The program was formally launched at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City, reports the Philippine Star. The "Santa cops" later distributed candies to shoppers, says GMANews.tv.
