In observance of Bonifacio Day, Malacañang declared December 1, a Monday, a special non-working holiday in lieu of the regular November 30 holiday that this year falls on a Sunday. This was done in accordance with Republic Act 9492, which “provides that holidays, except those which are religious in nature, [be] moved to the nearest Monday unless otherwise modified by law, order or proclamation,” explained pia.gov.ph. In addition to enjoying the post-Christmas weekend of December 27 and 28, Pinoys can relish the following off-days in December, according to gmanews.tv: December 26 (Friday) and 29 (Monday), which are special non-working holidays; December 30 (Tuesday), a regular holiday commemorating the martyrdom of the national hero, José Rizal; and December 31 (Wednesday), declared a special holiday because it is the “last day of the year.” Following the regular January 1 holiday, January 2 might also be on the list of vacation dates because it falls on a Friday, noted newsflash.org. The Department of Labor and Empoyment announced that “workers are entitled to at least 490 percent additional pay if they opt to report for work during the week-long holiday”, added newsflash.org. Due to the holiday schedule, banks have also declared December 24 to be the last day for transactions in 2008, according to pia.gov.ph. They will resume operations on January 2, 2009.
