On the Maguindanao Massacre

peaceIt is one of the darkest days, probably THE darkest day in Philippine Media history as at least 30 persons, mostly comprised of journalists, are not only confirmed dead but some were also found beheaded and mutilated, and the women raped.

Still 6 months away, the country has now its first reported political violence linked to the May 2010 election. This is a fact, however, that is overshadowed by how massive the scale of this dreadful and senseless massacre is. Rowena Paraan from The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines said “not even in Iraq has there ever been this many dead journalists in one incident. And this one was deliberate.”

Mindanao people who advocate for peace in the land, had and has long been trying, with whatever means necessary, to even at least enlighten the whole country and the world on how wonderful the island is, in all aspects, and how virtually every Mindanaoan campaign for peace in the region; that it’s not just about political clan wars, killings and bombings but also about growth, progress, development and how culture-proud its people are. These same people also yearn so badly that these bad elements finally stop on their tracks, with some even going out of their way to document and report about them, only to end up paying with their lives, not to be even heard at times.

This incident is a clear demonstration that the convoy involved wanted this election to work, in the most non-violent but most assertive way they could possible. They knew the repercussions they might encounter along the way. In hindsight they knew something unpleasant was going to happen, that’s why they gathered women and more peaceful backers to help them pass Mangudadatu’s Certificate of Candidacy (COCs) to Maguindanao’s COMELEC with thoughts that they will be untouched and unharmed by whosoever wishes to thwart their efforts, given the factors considered.

Unfortunately, their efforts were indeed thwarted in the most brutal and barbaric ways one could not even dare imagine.

It is sad and frustrating that with years of effort, a mindless carnage like this, executed in even less than a day, will, make this part of the country not only, once more, be in foreign advisories, but most definitely be under the world’s extreme scrutiny and unwarranted prejudgment.

Voices that have been drowned out for so long have finally surfaced, yes. But it took a tragedy of this proportion for the people who risked their lives for peace and justice to finally be heard.

Yeah, it's just sad. Most of us Mindanaoans arent war-hungry and we're just happy with living our lives.
Years upon years of trying to educate people about the real Mindanao is destroyed in a single day's violence.
Even "Reputable" news sources are labelling the whole of Mindanao as being lawless and bloddy. It's a sad day for the relatives of the ones involved in the massacre, it's a sad day for Mindanao, and it's a sad day for the Philippines.

the brutality is just horrible. I feel so much for the families who lost their loved ones in the Maguindanao massacre. How do they even begin to comprehend the immensity of their loss? Such unfamiliar territory. I hope our government has the political will to arrest and punish the perpetuators of the massacr

I think that this is more than a mass massacre, as we can also call it as and act of evil. These beasts should be brought back to hell, and the government should act immediately.

I was just wondering why the suspects are not being apprehended, as I believe there is they will be if only the suspects are ordinary people .

Unfortunately, I don't see any strong reactions from the presidential candidates. They should realize that this is among the problems they will face after spending millions for their campaign.

But then, I am hoping that this is the last election related crime. If some devils want to kill each other to fight for the love of power and money, then don't include innocent people.

this is very sad indeed. It just shows that the law here in the philippines is weak and favors the rich, powerful people. If GMA or the administration isnt afraid of such powerful clan, why they had to go soft over their statement against the violence that just happened in Maguindanao? it just shows that gloria is afraid of those influential people.

I doubt the government can resolve the issue in Maguindanao, matagal na ang issue na yan and yet the government is acting blind and deaf. Ang dami nang pinatay dyan ma election related man o hindi, I bet, walang makukulong dyan at kung meron man FALL GUY na naman just to show to the public that they are doing something. Kala kasi nila people are d*** to understand what they are doing. You are all witness to this massacre, kayo na rin ang mag judge as to how the government can resolve the issue!! Let's fight this was against human rights violence.

When you pass by the town of Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao, corruption, political dynasty, and poverty mirrors the extreme situation in ARMM. Ampatuan's are leaving on their mansions but its surrounded by squatters. Ampatuan's are now known in Davao City because of their Mansions and Cars. They will cause a traffic once they are here in Davao City because of their convoy. Talo pa nila ang mayor namin sa dami ng bodyguard nila (private army).
