Chiz, I'm confused

Bloggers meet and greet Senator Chiz Escudero. The first time I met with Chiz Escudero was in August 2009.  There was a bloggers Meet and Greet Chiz Escudero event.  I asked him straight out during that first meet & greet, if he was running for the presidency.Without hesitation, Chiz Escudero answered, “yes”.

At the time, I was quite impressed at how determined he was & how confident he was that he can lead the change for our Philippines.

We all know what has happened since then:

  • Cory died.
  • Mar Roxas dropped out of the race, and
  • Noynoy Aquino is now the Liberal Party’s candidate.

Then all of a sudden, Chiz Escudero quit his party, the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC).  Like a lot of people, like many of his supporters, I was confused.

So last Saturday (November 7), I attended a bloggers’ meeting with Chiz Escudero at Annabel’s in Quezon City.  I was excited to go as I had sooooooo many questions to ask Chiz about his plans on the presidency.

I was expecting to get a concrete answer.  To be honest, I was surprised.  Last Saturday, I saw a different Chiz from the one who met bloggers last August.  I’m not sure if he was acting or if he is just confused at the moment.  It wasn’t the same Chiz I got to admire during the first meet.

When I asked him the same question I did during the first meet and greet, about his plans to run, the answer I got was unfortunately, “not sure yet.”

Chiz Escudero said that he doesn’t know and will still need to decide.  He mentioned he’ll decide on November 15 and will share with us his decision come December 1.

What changed?

I’m confused. Why didn’t we get this vibe when we first met Chiz? Maybe the change is just a strategy? Maybe it’s his way to save himself from trailing in the surveys? Maybe rumors are true that Danding Cojuangco is no longer interested in funding his campaign? Maybe he’s really just confused and unsure if he’s the right person to lead our country?

Left and right, pundits everywhere have been talking about Chiz Escudero leaving the NPC. I can bore you with recounting all the rumors, the speculations, and retell what the pundits are saying, but I think it is best that Chiz himself say why he left the NPC:

JavaScript is disabled!
To display this content, you need a JavaScript capable browser.

Let me summarize for you his points. This is what Chiz said:

  • Decision to leave NPC came after much thought
  • Always a maverick inside the party
  • when NPC allied with Gloria, Escudero was with Erap
  • was spokesperson for FPJ, when NPC was pro-administration
  • has always spoken his mind
  • A difference of platform/ideology exist between NPC & Escudero
  • left NPC in an orderly manner & with his party elders' blessing
  • is not against political parties, was misquoted
  • wanted to be independent so he could become involved with everyone
  • does not want to be indebted to anyone
  • choice to leave wasn't about the money, as some have speculated
  • if money was the issue, at least with NPC, there was money

You’ve listened to what he had to say, to clarify some of the things mentioned on television and to counter what the pundits have been speculating on.

The biggest problem I have with Chiz is that this was a different Escudero from the person I met several months back.  He was less sure of himself this time.  Maybe it is because of his indecision.  Maybe it is because we have to wait a few more weeks for him to say for sure, if he is running or not.

Should I now stop considering Escudero as a candidate?  December 1 is too long a wait for Escudero to announce his decision.  We need a president who is firm and decisive.  Maybe it is time to listen to the pundits: Chiz committed political suicide.  All I can say is, “Chiz, I’m confused.”

Maybe I'm not smart enough. I really don't get what Chiz want's to accomplish and trying to figure it out is giving me a headache.

I like him.. but he's taking too long to decide, and you're right, he seems quite confused himself.

well, the best of luck to him then.. hopefully he can get his acts together again.

As I missed out on the second meeting, I share with you the admiration you had for him on the first encounter. I'm a bit disappointed over his indecision now, but knowing how he's been speaking very highly of Noynoy in the meantime, I have a good feeling what his final decision will be at this point.

i suggest chiz to support ninoy in 2010 election and then run for president after 6 years. he still have my vote. no matter what xoxo

Running for Presidency and losing in the elections is a means to get rich quick. By losing you need not repay contributors. Miriam did it in 1992 and Ping Lacson did it in 2004. Chiz is just pondering whether to venture now or later. His body language says more than his words.

i think he knows that he won't win against noynoy especially noynoy has the votes of most filipinos, due to the fact that madam cory just died recently.

making good decision takes time, and making better decision takes even more time.

he's just doing what he thinks is right.

on my opinion it is better for him to stand by with noynoy and mar than competing with them.

its ok to change your mind for the greater good... if it means unifying the opposition then I salute you but if you change your mind because your trying to gauge your standing as a candidate... then we better think twice...

I believe that chiz is a great person and can do good things but i think the timing is a little bit off.

the strategy is kinda lame... the other side used it already lol

Political party is just a vehicle....any aspirant can move without it..no hassles...no apprehensions..only the determination to run and win...to serve unselfishly..like what ESCUDERO is doing at the present...not the party, but the country!!
Whosoever did not understand what chiz did in leaving NPC, you must think dynamic , weigh Chiz' actions and his vision in the future...before prejudging Chiz' unconventional strategy, for he thinks differently among the politicians in our country ...and many believes that what he does, he actually can and apply the same ...
Chiz is as great as a role model for the youth in realizing his selfless aspirations for the Filipino people! The youth of today understands, supports and vetoed for Chiz' principles which are obviously what many have been waiting for eversince>>> to be free, no liens nor encumbrances..not poisoning the minds of the youth !
The dismissal of a political party is no hindrance to progress, its the opposite instead, when you could not do what you are suppose to do for the benefit of the people, not the party!
Chiz did consult the people, but not to let everyone know that he did, that many spectators should approved of but in order to decide and go forward without any doubts...there is still an equilibrium in politics, where the rich and the poor together judge the electorates , but differ in opinion, principles and purposes!
Was it not right to claim independence from a political group where you cannot say anything, do what you like, and laiden in a box? those were his statements clearly , very-well said during the announcement on October 28 @Club Filipino.
If i may say so, the real ambition of Chiz Escudero is not to be the sole decider of the fate of the filipino people, as you were claiming because that would be impossible, but the famous Philippine Politics Quotation as " my loyalty to my party ends, where my loyalty to my country begins!" >>> and this is not a very selfish/idiotic ambition, but a praiseworthy one!

this is my personal view on the matter, being an ordinary Chiz supporter/voter , thanks for the opportunity!

I think he found his confidence AFTER he announced that he was not running for president.

Good old Chiz is back.

To Chiz
Just don't say you are gunning for the presidency until you are sure. You don't have a monopoly to disappointment.
