Taliban suicide bombers attacked the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, leaving at least 30 people killed and 46 wounded.
The series of blasts targeted the city prison and several political landmarks. The attack was reportedly carried out as a message to NATO, according to The Guardian.
Ahmad Ali Wali Karzai, half-brother of Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, said one of the bombs exploded near his home. The fourth blast was at Kandahar police headquarters, where four policeman were confirmed dead. The explosions occurred close to Pakistan's consulate in the eastern part of the city.
The latest bombings came as NATO and Afghan forces continued a major operation against Taliban militants in neighbouring Helmand province. Coalition forces in Kabul said the International Security Assistance Force in Kandahar was not targeted.
According to BBC, Kandahar, one of Afghanistan’s largest cities, is the Taliban’s "spiritual home" with more than 800,000 population.
US military commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, has hinted that Nato and Afghan forces are planning an offensive in Kandahar province later this year.
