Taylor, Executive Director of the Australian Mathematics Trust.Doing their teachers and their country proud, young Filipino aces nabbed perfect and near-perfect scores in a prestigious international math contest.

Julius Vincent Sy, a second-year student in St. Stephen's High School in Sta. Cruz, Manila, got a perfect score in the 2009 Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) while 13 others "registered scores of over 99.7 percent," inquirer.net reported.

For being one of only 20 students around the world who got perfect scores, Sy garnered a medal and a Peter O'Halloran certificate.

The 13 other winners were Amiel Sy and Emiliano Tan (Philippine Science High School-Main), Justin Edric Yturzaeta (Jubilee Christian Academy), John Russell Virata (Gideon Academy), Alvin Uy Lim (Quezon City Science High School), and Seanne Ng, Adrian Sy, Czarina Lao and Audrey Lao (St. Jude Catholic School), Lormes Pedeglorio (Butuan City Special Education Center), Miguel Lorenzo Ildesa (Paref-Westbridge School), Jake Gacuan (University of the Philippines), and Aldric Cristobal Reyes (Chiang Kai Shek College), inquirer.net reported.

The awarding ceremonies for Philippine participants took place yesterday at the Sofitel Plaza Hotel in Pasay City. Sen. Peter Cayetano presided over the event, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said.

According to manilatimes.net, 43 other students also "bagged High Distinction honors for being at the top two percent of examinees in their year level." Eleven students also got a Prudence Award for getting the most number of consecutive correct answers starting from the AMC's first question, DOST said.

The 32nd AMC, contest administrator Australian Mathematics Trust (AMT) said, was held on August 6, 2009. It tests a variety of math skills from numeracy to advanced problem solving via a multiple choice exam. It was initially introduced in Australia in 1978 and was the country's first interschool competition.

"It has become the largest single event on the Australian Education Calendar, allowing students to attempt the same tasks, on the same day in about 40 countries," the AMT said.

This year is the first, the AMT noted, that medals were won in Iran, South Korea and Trinidad and Tobago.
