No Ronald Pascual, no Calvin Abueva, no problem.
San Sebastian, hamstrung by the lack of two of their best players, managed to wrangle a 62-51 victory over the slumping College of Saint Benilde in the first seniors game in the Friday showcase of the NCAA at The Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Pamboy Raymundo led all Stags scorers for 14 points, while Jonathan Semira added 11 points. The Stags keep themselves within a game of league-leading San Beda for the first twice-to-beat advantage.
For the first time this season, Calvin Abueva was included in the starting five in order to boost the sluggish Stags. Unfortunately for him, he only managed to play a quarter before spraining his right foot. Before succumbing to the injury, he scored 7 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 10 minutes of play.
In the third period, Carlo Lastimosa shaked off the San Sebastian defense to explode for 11 points to help Benilde tie the ballgame momentarily at two separate occasions early in the period. But the Stags quickly extinguished the Blazers' surge and take a seven point advantage entering the final period.
Instead of fighting for their lives, the Taft squad laid down and died in the fourth quarter to the ire of coach Richard Del Rosario, who walked out on the team after the final buzzer.
Rookie Carlo Lastimosa scored 26 points, but once again did not receive any backup from his fellow Blazers. The young College of Saint Benilde are now struggling more than ever to find form, as they drop to 2-8.
In the twinbill's main event, San Beda kept the pesky Emilio Aguinaldo College at bay in their 92-68 walkover. Garvo Lanete led the Bedans with 17 points, while pro-bound Borgie Hermida nabbed his first career triple-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to earn a distinction of being NCAA co-Player of the Week with Jose Rizal University's Nat Matute.
With the first two periods of action being tightly contested, the Red Lions burst out of the dugout with a 34 point third quarter, mostly from Hermida's 8 points and Fil-Aussie rookie Anthony Semerad's 10 points, and never looked back.
The win kept San Beda ahead of closest rival San Sebastian by one game in the standings with an unblemished 10-0 mark.
On the other hand, Argel Mendoza and Lowell Yaya scored 16 points each in the Generals' fourth consecutive setback in five outings to plunge to seventh place with a 2-8 card, tying Benilde for seventh place.
Staglets, Red Cubs continue winning ways
Two of the winningest teams during the last decade in the juniors division, San Sebastian and San Beda, scored victories against CSB-La Salle Greenhills and EAC-Immaculate Conception Academy respectively to strengthen their bids for higher rankings in the Final Four.
Relying on Gino Jumao-as and Vitorio Vergara's combined total of 23 points in the third quarter, San Sebastian pulled away with a 74-69 victory over CSB-LSGH. Jumao-as finished with 23 points and 7 rebounds, while Vergara tallied 17 points.
The Staglets forge a tie with Jose Rizal University for the last Final Four slot in the juniors division with an identical 6-4 mark.
In the second game, San Beda easily disposed of EAC-ICA in a 70-56 dumping. Adam Abatayo led the Red Cubs with 15 points, while King Cub Baser Amer filled the statlines with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Taytay-based squad keeps their head above the competition with a near-perfect 9-1 mark to lead the pack.
Nelson Mendoza scored 19 points to lead the Brigadiers, who slid further down the standings with their ninth straight loss after winning on opening day against Arellano University.
