Former two-time World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight champion Mexican boxer Jose Luis Castillo is retiring.
According to a report from The Philippine Star, Castillo declared that he was retiring last Saturday night, "after quitting on his stool before the start of the sixth round in a fight against Alfonso Gomez in the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey undercard."
Castillo, 36, reportedly looked "sluggish, pale, and generally unprepared in the battle against Gomez, who won at least four rounds before Castillo threw in the towel."
The surrender came as a surprise because a few days before the match, Castillo offered Gomez a side bet of USD20,000 (P913,899), winner-take-all.
Castillo apologized to the public, saying he realized he didn't "have it anymore."
He said that he was going to move on, but would stay involved with boxing. "I’ve got eight fighters in my stable and I hope to produce world champions," he said.
Castillo flew to Baguio City last year at the invitation of trainer Freddie Roach to spar with Pacquiao, who had been preparing to face off against Miguel Cotto at the time.
