When Manny Pacquiao squares off against Joshua Clottey for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title, the fight odds suggest that Pacquiao will be all but unbeatable.
In a report from The Philippine Star, Vegas bookmakers have placed Pacquiao at minus 800, while Clottey is at plus 550. This means that to earn a hundred bucks on a Pacquiao victory, one must be willing to put down $800. Placing a $100 bet on Clottey, however, could mean $550 in winnings if he triumphs.
At plus 130 is Pacquiao winning by decision, while his winning by stoppage is at minus 150. Should Clottey win on points, every $100 bet pays $600, and should he do so via a knockout, every $100 bet pays $400.
About a month ago, the gambling site Gambling911.com had already reported on remarkable adjustments oddsmakers were making in favor of Pacquiao.
The odds have never been as skewed as this before. The last time Pacquiao was an underdog was in 2008, when he faced Oscar dela Hoya. There are other, more attractive lines of betting to consider, however, as Philippine Daily Inquirer observed.
For instance, the odds that the fight "will go" the distance is minus 180, while the odds it "won't go" is plus 140. In other words, if the bout lasts less than nine and a half rounds, a $100 bet on "won't go" will earn $140, while a "will go" bet of $180 will net just $100.
Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's trainer, has said that he thinks it will be over in nine rounds.
