World Boxing Association (WBA) interim super flyweight champion Nonito Donaire (22-1, 14 KOs) was offered a rematch against reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) and WBA world champion Vic Darchinyan (33-2-1, 27 KOs) of Australia in July, Philboxing.com reported today.
“Maniatis told us that Australian promoters are hoping to get the blockbuster rematch on the undercard of a fight to be headlined by popular Danny Green who recently knocked out Roy Jones, Jr. in one round to win the IBO (International Boxing Organization) cruiserweight title,” sports columnist Ronnie Nathanielsz wrote.
Nathanielsz also added that Darchinyan himself would like to pick Donaire as challenger for his title defense.
Donaire earlier expressed his desire to have a rematch with Darchinyan. "I've been waiting for that fight. I'm here and I hope he's got enough confidence for him to step up into the ring with me again...If they can make the fight happen that's fine. I'm well ready for this fight and I'm actually excited to see that the fight will happen," Donaire said on badlefthook.com last 14 December 2009.
Donaire won his first ever world title (International Boxing Federation flyweight) last 7 July 2007 at the expense of Darchinyan, whom he knocked out with a powerful left cross to the jaw in the fifth round. Darchinyan later settled for a draw in a world title-eliminator versus now-retired Z Gorres last 2 February 2008 but later won three world titles in succession, the last being a first-round knockout win versus then WBC and WBA superflyweight champion Cristian Mijares of Mexico.
Donaire is set to defend his belt against Gerson Guerrero of Mexico on Valentine's Day (Manila time) in Las Vegas.
