Filipino boxers Brian
"The Hawaiian Punch" Viloria
and Nonito
"The Filipino Flash" Donaire Jr.
successfully brought down both of their Mexican foes in yesterday's
matches at the Araneta
Coliseum.
After becoming the World Boxing Council (WBC) champion in 2005, Viloria was faced with several losses that almost left his career in limbo. "You see, last year, I fought in swap meets and small arena, places where people don't even dare to go," he said in a post-fight interview. He became teary-eyed after knocking his Mexican opponent Ulises Solis in the 11th round to snag the BF light flyweight title. "This is the defining moment of my career. I know this will be my last chance. I know that if I lost this fight I have to go," he said.
Viloria, who gave Solis a cut on the right eyebrow in the fifth round and hit him on the left eyelid in the seventh round, admitted that Solis was a "tough nut to crack." He knocked Solis out with a right hook that concluded the fight. Solis said that Viloria was a great fighter and the match "was a tough fight. But a great champion like me comes back," he added after requesting a rematch.
Donaire, another victorious Filipino boxer in the co-main event, did not let his painful left fist stop him from giving an impressive performance. He was able to finish the fight with a TKO in four rounds. "He's a real champion. I'm a big fan of him now," said Mexican challenger Raul Martinez after having this bout as his first loss after 24 wins. Donaire currently holds the IBO/IBF flyweight title, a position he has defended successfully for the past three years. According to promoter Bob Arum, this will be Doanire's last flyweight fight. His next fights will be in either the superflyweight or the bantamweight categories. Arum said Donaire would have to "rumble with the big boys" after this excellent performance.
On May 2, 2009, another boxing megafight will be watched by millions as Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao faces Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton in Las Vegas.
