Gilas drubs Beermen, gain solo lead atop standings

The Philippine national developmental squad burned a slumping San Miguel Beermen by a count of 109-68 on Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

Big man Marcus Douthit, guard Mark Barroca and seldom used swingman Dylan Ababou led the Gilas outfit with 17 points apiece. Marcio Lassiter did most of the damage in a decisive third quarter spurt, scoring 13 of his game total of 16 in that stretch where the Rajko Toroman-mentored Nationals blew open the match on a 31-11 outburst that buried the Beermen.

David Young tallied 15 points, while locals Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Jay Washington each had 13 in their third loss out of four contests in the tournament.

Main SMB contributors Arwind Santos and Alex Cabagnot struggled throughout the contest, with the former FEU slotman Santos scoring only two points with 10 rebounds in 21 minutes of action. On the other hand, the 6-foot-0 starting guard Cabagnot was held scoreless in his tenure.

Alaska drops B-MEG; Talk 'N Text halts Rain Or Shine rampage

The Aces, led by import LD Williams, romped to their fourth win in their last five games via a 97-91 conquest of B-MEG Derby Ace on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.

The 6-foot-4 swingman from Wake Forest contributed 30 points, followed by former number one overall pick Joe Devance who had 19 points to go along with 14 rebounds and 5 assists.

James Yap's 22 points and 6 rebounds was the Llamados' high in their third loss in five outings.

Not to be outdone, however, Talk 'N Text routs then-undefeated Rain or Shine by a count of 99-78 to equal the Aces' 4-1 win-loss mark to hand the Elasto Painters their first loss under new mentor Joseller "Yeng" Guiao.

Tropang Texters reinforcement Paul Harris nearly finished with double-double numbers of 32 points and 9 assists. Super sub Ali Peek pushed his weight in the shaded lane wtih 23 points and 10 rebounds, while "Machine Gun" Kelly Williams had 16 points and 11 rebounds to his name.

The then-undefeated Rain Or Shine missed the services of their import Hassan Adams in the late stages of the contest due to an injury, but still topped all of their squad's scorers at the end of 48 minutes with 26 points in a losing cause.

Both Talk 'N Text and Alaska trail the still-undefeated Smart-Gilas Pilipinas (4-0), who curiously handed their respective losses this season, by half a game with equal 4-1 marks.
