Considered the country's last hope for a gold medal, the Philippine chess team settled for a silver medal instead. The team lost to China, 3.5-0.5, at the finals of the men's team chess tournament in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.
The losing woodpushers are chess legend Eugene Torre (ELO 2484), former college standout John Paul Gomez (ELO 2522), and veteran Darwin Laylo (2527). 17-year-old grandmaster Wesley So (ELO 2669) was able to salvage a draw against Chinese super grandmaster Wang Yue (ELO 2756).
En route to the finals, the national team beat seven countries and lost to China once. The Indian team, superior to the Philippine squad in terms of combined ELO rating, captured the bronze medal.
In other sports, diver Sheila Mae Perez placed fifth in the women's three-meter springboard category, which was won by He Zi of China. Danilo Fresnido, meanwhile, was good for 10th place in the javelin throw, which was won by Yukifumi Murakami of Japan.
The Philippines is currently at 18th place with three gold, four silver, and nine bronze medals.
