The Philippine national team gave Singapore a very rude welcome in a 101-34 thrashing in the second game on the opening day of the 7th Southeast Asia Basketball Association (SEABA) Championship for Women at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.
Without letting up the entire 40 minutes of play, the wards of coach Haydee Ong easily ran around the relaxed Lion City defense. The squad dubbed as "Perlas ng Silangan" were led by a double-double output of 19 points and 10 rebounds from Fatz Tolentino.
With two of their last three assignments in the single round robin tournament against tough opposition in Malaysia and defending champions Thailand, the RP cagebelles are right on track for their aim to garner a first place finish with a near-intact lineup from last year, which finished 10th in the FIBA Asia Women’s Championship in Chennai, India.
The Filipinas dominated the shaded lane by a lopsided 54-10 margin. They also shut out the ladies from the Lion City in the second chance points, 13-0, while making a living out of the 36 Singapore turnovers into 20 points.
Malaysia, on the other hand, whipped Indonesia by 14 points, 84-60, in the day’s curtain raiser. Woon Yuen Teo finished with 19 points and 8 rebounds, while Hu Pin Pang added 13 points and 7 rebounds to their cause. They will meet the Philippines on Tuesday at 4 p.m. to break a momentary tie in first place.
