President Benigno Aquino III named more officials in his official Cabinet, Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa said yesterday.
ANC correspondent Willard Cheng reported minutes ago that former Naga City mayor Jesse Robredo was named as the new secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).
Robredo is known as an advocate of good governance in his city, which he served for three terms. He is a convenor of the good governance advocacy group Kaya Natin (We Can Do It) Movement, together with former governors Ed Panlilio of Pampanga and Grace Padaca of Isabela and current Ifugao representative Teddy Baguilat.
Vice-President Jejomar Binay reportedly expressed his interest to head the DILG while civil society groups affiliated with Mr. Aquino's Liberal Party endorsed Robredo. Mr. Aquino temporarily sat as DILG Secretary prior to Robredo's appointment.
Aquino appoints more execs
Among the newly-appointed department heads by Mr. Aquino are Virginia Torres of the Land Transportation Office (LTO); Magtanggol Gatdula of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI); Angelito Banayo of the National Food Authority (NFA); Cesar Garcia of the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA); Trifonio Salazar of the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA); and Jose Honrado of the Manila Internation Airport Authority (MIAA).
Torres is a former LTO head of Mr. Aquino's hometown Tarlac City. She now holds a considerably crucial government position, since Mr. Aquino promised in his inaugural speech to end the use of non-government issued sirens and commemorative plates.
LTO Baler head Rene Macalisang praised Torres, saying that she sometimes accompanies LTO personnel in apprehending traffic violators and colorum public vehicles.
Gatdula meanwhile is the former chief of the Quezon City Police District and is believed to be endorsed by the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC), the Philippine Star reported. Gatdula was also an officer of the defunct Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Task Force under the Joseph Estrada administration. The INC endorsed Mr. Aquino as its presidential bet during the last election campaign.
Banayo is a former adviser of Estrada and is a columnist for Malaya, while Garcia, Salazar, and Honrado are retired military generals.
Days after his inauguration as President, Mr. Aquino appointed former college classmate Cristino Naguiat and shipping businessman Lito Alvarez as heads of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation and the Bureau of Customs, respectively.
A day before his inauguration, Mr. Aquino named 28 cabinet secretaries.
