After a long list of politicians have been considered for the post, ruling party Lakas-Kampi-CMD today finally found a vice-presidential candidate in former Optical Media Board chair Edu Manzano.
Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno introduced actor Manzano to be the running mate of the administration party standard-bearer Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro at a press conference in Makati Shangrila Hotel shortly after noon today.
Manzano,54, is hoped to add “luster” to the struggling campaign of the administration ticket. Presidential bet Teodoro is consistently seen lagging in recent presidential preference surveys.
The former Makati vice-mayor said that Puno “played a big role” in convincing him to run for vice president. His decision to run under the administration party came as a surprise as his name earlier cropped up as a possible senatorial candidate under the Liberal Party. Fellow actor and former President Joseph Estrada also reportedly considered Manzano as his running mate.
Teodoro hailed his running mate as “intelligent.” Both him and Manzano are alumni of the De La Salle University.
Meannwhile, other politicians welcomed the entry of the popular game show host in the 2010 contest.
Liberal party vice-presidential bet and current survey frontrunner, Mar Roxas called Manzano a “worthy opponent.”
Manzano's former wife, Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos-Recto expressed her support for his candidacy. Santos-Recto herself was reportedly offered the vice-presidential post for Lakas-Kampi-CMD.
