After barely a year in office, Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) chief Sixto Esquivias IV has reportedly resigned from his post.
He would likely be replaced by Senior Deputy Commissioner Joel Tan-Torres, a source told bworldonline.com. However, Finance Secretary Margarito Teves said he could not yet confirm or deny who will become the new commissioner, as the appointment will be decided by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
Tan-Torres also declined to speak on the issue, because the BIR personnel had yet to be informed about the resignation as of Monday.
Esquivias could not be reached for comment, but according to mb.com.ph, "close aides...said the resignation was triggered by policy differences with top finance officials."
Reports had said that BIR officials had an argument last Thursday during a bureau meeting, businessmirror.com.ph noted. This was denied, however, by BIR Manila's regional director Arnel Guballa, who said, "There's nothing like that, everything is cordial with us."
Lawyer-accountant Esquivias assumed his post in November 2008, amid questions from critics on whether he would be able to meet the government's revenue targets, which previous commissioners had been hard-pressed to reach, abs-cbnNEWS.com said.
