Fermin Loreco, activist and leader of a farmers' group, was shot dead yesterday after attending a rally protesting against Constituent assembly (Con-ass) in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.
Loreco was the chairman of Kaugmaon-Kulusan Magbubukid ng Pilipinas Negros Oriental. He was on his way home when unidentified assailant shot him in the head. "During the rally, Loreco was even interviewed by an ABS-CBN News team where he expressed his strong opposition on con-ass. He told the ABS-CBN News team that the country would be in more difficult times if Charter change would push through," reported ABS-CBNnews.com. A member of the group suspects that military personnel were the ones behind the killing.
Last week, farmers' rights leader Rene Peñas was also killed by unidentified gunmen in Sumilao, Bukidnon.
