6th iBlog Summit Day 1 tackles online biz strats

The 6th i-Blog Philippine Blogging Summit kicked off yesterday at the University of the Philippines-Diliman (UP) Malcolm Theater, with around 200 bloggers and online advertisers converging to discuss the current trends in the blogosphere regarding online marketing and advertising.

The summit, sponsored by the UP College of Law, Vibal Foundation, and 88DB.com, among others, opened with an opening speech from lawyer/blogger JJ Disini, who described the day's theme, “How to make business through blogging.”

Business and advertising blogger Janette Toral then started the first discussion of the day, tackling the theme “Blogging for business: Tapping bloggers to generate buzz,” where she emphasized the qualities of uniqueness and creativity in pursuing business ventures within the blogosphere.

Tech blogger Abe Olandres next gave a general overview on advertising in blogs, where he presented the pros and cons of popular advertising schemes used in blogs, particularly link ads and ad networks. He also revealed the potentially huge profits a blogger can earn if he ventures in advertising on blogs.

In connection with Olandres' topic, business blogger Francis Gary Viray presented tips on how to lure online advertisers by increasing site hits and visits through search engine optimization (SEO). SEO involves mechanisms to improve the volume of traffic to a website or blog, depending on specific search engines.

Blog Watch contributor and media blogger Carlo Ople meanwhile discussed both positive and negative effects of online advertising on blogs, and how blog buzz are measured, while romance blogger Diana Paterno, who described herself as a “non-techie” blogger, described how a blogger and an advertiser can attain a “win-win relationship.” Blogger Manuel Viloria meanwhile delved into the topic “Online Attraction Marketing,” where he expounded on various online marketing strategies.

The legal concerns of bloggers were also discussed yesterday, with lawyer/blogger Emerson Banez giving a crash course on libel, copyright, and patent laws. He also discussed the dynamics of using Creative Commons licensing and attribution, which is used by the Philippine Online Chronicles (POC) in the attribution of photos and other creative works.

Today's i-Blog session will tackle topics on video/photo blogging, mobile blogging, and political blogging, particularly for the 2010 elections.
