A copy of Batman’s debut comic book released in 1939 has sold for USD1.075 million (P49.4 million) beating Superman’s huge auction in New York that sold for USD1 million (P46 million).
Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas, Texas, said the copy of Detective Comics Number 27, which pictures Batman swooping on a villain, sold for US$1,075,500, MSN News reported.
The rare surviving copy of the comic-book drawn by the legendary Bob Kane had been expected to do well. But it had crushed the previous auction high for any comic, set last year at Metropolis Comics in when a copy of Action Comics #1, featuring the first appearance of Superman.
The anonymous seller of the Detective Comics had bought the comic more than 40 years ago for USD100, Art Info blog posted.
“The first appearance of Batman, this comic has been considered among the top books in the hobby ever since comic collecting began,' Heritage Auction said in a report from Agence France Presse.
The six-page original Batman story was titled ‘The Case of the Chemical Syndicate.’ The cover of the issue had the banner headline “Starting this issue: the amazing and unique adventures of the Batman.”
