RP is 5th most most active Asian country in Twitter

The Philippines was listed as the fifth most active Asian country in the micro-blogging and social networking site Twitter.

Based on social media monitoring agency Sysomos report - ‘Exploring the Use of Twitter Around the World, the Philippines enjoys a 0.85% share of voice or tweets around the world. Indonesians are the most active with 2.34% share of the world’s tweets, followed by Japan, India and Singapore. Thailand failed to make it to the top ten.

The statistics are based on total number of tweets sent between October 16 and December 16, 2009, and takes into account 13 million accounts that were active during the period

Asian Correspondent blogger Jonathan Russel posted that “Sysomos finally looked at individual cities and their share of users and activity.  Jakarta is the sole Southeast Asian representative with 0.58% of Twitter users and 0.8% of Twitter activity.”

He said the lack of major Asian presence can be put down to a number of reasons including language, competition and population distribution. “English is not spoken as commonly across the region. While Twitter does accommodate non-Roman scripts, much of conversation is in English and therefore of little value to Asia as a whole.

He added, “for linguistic reasons many countries, like Japan and China, have their own Twitter-like services, therefore reducing the number of Twitter user. Outside of major global cities in Asia standards of living vary hugely. While there are many British Twitter users outside of London, the same cannot be said of Twitter users in Thailand outside of Bangkok.”
