Playboy launched a web-based edition specially optimized for the iPad tablet. The HTML 5 based application contains every issue of the adult magazine, totaling around 700 issues and 130,000 pages of images and articles.
Available iPad subscriptions include $8 monthly, $60 yearly and $100 biannually. While the prices are higher than the magazine issues, subscription means having access to all of Playboy’s issues.
Jimmy Jellinek, PlayBoy’s chief content officer, said users will “no longer have to store 57 years - 682 issues - of Playboy under their mattress.” He also called the app ‘the world's sexiest time machine’.
With iPad, viewers would be able to scan the pages like a real magazine because of the tablet’s rotation awareness and centerfold and spanning features.
Drawbacks
Unfortunately, the web app can only be accessed while being online. There is no local caching so you would have to be online to browse the issues.
Another problem is that while the table of contents is hyperlinked, there are no interactive features within the online magazine.
It would also ask for your login credentials everytime you access the application. According to reports, the copies are in low resolution
Meanwhile, the censored Playboy application is also still available in the App store, though most users rated it one star out of five because of the lack of nude photographs.
