WikiPilipinas now Creative Commons-licensed

Starting on 28 March 2011, all entries in the three websites under WikiPilipinas will be licensed under Creative Commons (CC) Attribution-ShareAlike to democratize the access and distribution of information stored in the website.

This move is in consonance with Vibal Foundation's mission of sharing free and open knowledge about the Philippines, which is the spirit behind the WikiPilipinas, WikiFilipino, and WikiHealth. Its sister websites, Filipiniana.net, The Philippine Online Chronicles, and E-Turo.org also use the CC license.

WikiPilipinas was previously licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL), which, like CC, allows a person to distribute, share, and modify GNU-licensed documents and files. However, unlike GFDL, a CC license may allow non-commercial appropriations.

Furthermore, GFDL-licensed materials are not compatible with the increasing number of CC-licensed materials, thus, making the redistribution of free materials easier.
