Sulyap launch headlines Komikon 2010

The 6th Annual Filipino Komiks Convention (Komikon) will take place tomorrow, Nov. 13 at Starmall Trade Hall, EDSA cor. Shaw Blvd., Mandaluyong City, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Tomorrow's activities will be highlighted by the launching of Komikon's first independent comic anthology Sulyap. It features the works of eight comic book writers, some of whom reportedly started out by joining Komikon contests themselves.

The compilation includes Ambition by Ian Olympia, Baboy 1&2 by Mel Casipit, Goodbye Rubbit by RH Quilantang, Kalayaan by Gio Paredes, Lipad by Rommel Estanislao, Maktan 1521 by Tepai Pascual, Taal Monster vs Evil Space Paru-paro by Macoy, and Windmills: Bearkdowns by Josel Nicolas.

Published by Komikon, Inc., this collection of short Filipino independent komiks works is designed and compiled by Digmaang Salinlahi creator Jon Zamar, with a foreword by Gerry "Komikero" Alanguilan. Culture Crash alumni Melvin “Taga-ilog” Calingo, whose Primer on Making Your Own Comic Book is also included in the compilation, designed Sulyap's cover art.

Komikon 2010's special guests include father-and-son cartoonists Jess and Manix Abrera. Jess Abrera popularized Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) comic strips A. Lipin and Pinoy Nga, while his son Manix is widely known for his Kikomachine comic strips, also published in PDI.

Harvey Tolibao, who penciled Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 12: Reunion, Part 2 and Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 18: Nights of Anger, Part 3 will join Stephen Segovia, who drew Tomas en Kulas of Funny Komiks. He is currently drawing Dark Wolverine for Marvel and Reign in Hell for DC Comics.

Carlo Pagulayan, who drew Emma Frost, Elektra, Superman, Hulk and the X-Men will also be tomorrow's special guest. He worked for Top Cow, Marvel and DC Comics.

A total of 34 independent comic book illustrators, publishers, and anime-collectibles merchandisers will participate at the Komikon Indie Comics tiangge. Games, video loops, and ticket raffles will likewise be held.

Komikon aims to continue publishing an independent comic book anthology to encourage more budding creators to continue honing their skills, and to showcase the broad offering of Filipino comics.

More information is available at Komikon's website.
