Potential witness to Maguindanao massacre missing

Reports that Senior Inspector Ariel Diongon, a potential witness to the Maguindanao massacre, went missing after he escaped custody last Friday and has not been seen since, were confirmed by Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Jesus Verzosa Monday.

Diongon was the former group director of the Police Provincial Mobile Group (PPMG) guarding one of the checkpoints where the massacre victims' convoy composed of Mangudadatu supporters and journalists passed last November 23. From Maguindanao, Diongon was brought to Manila for questioning. He was then placed under restrictive custody at the PNP headquarters at Camp Crame because of his knowledge about the massacre.

Verzosa told reporters that Diongon verbally asked for permission to be allowed to leave because he had some place to go, but because he was under restrictive custody, he was not allowed to leave the police camp.

Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) police director Senior Superintendent Bienvenido Garcia Latag told The STAR that Diongon was able to escape from his escort, Senior Police Officer 4 Nashrin Jakarain, and other custodians from the Headquarters Service Group at Camp Crame.

It has also been reported that seven other police officers namely, PPMG deputy director Inspector Michael Joy Macaraeg, Police Officers 1 Musa D. Abad, Jonathan Engid, Joharto E. Kaminda, Zoharto E. Samson, Abdul D. Macatimbol, and Abbey Guidem also went missing days after the massacre. The seven were charged with multiple murder for their alleged involvement in and cover-up of the massacre. They were also charged for being absent without leave.

As for Diongon, Verzosa  said he was still uncertain as to whether the missing police officer was a suspect or a witness because the Department of Justice (DOJ) has yet to act on the recommendation submitted by the PNP.

"We hope nothing harmful has happened to him,” PDI quoted Verzosa.
