Filipino artist and architect Arlanzandro C. Esmeña, whose work recently appeared in the erotic graphic novel Where Bold Stars Go to Die has passed away after battling cancer.
According to a blog entry by comics maker Gerry Alanguilan, the artist’s friend and collaborator on Bold Stars, “[Esmeña] never kept his cancer a secret, openly telling people that he was undergoing chemotherapy for the past few months and answering any questions about it. He found out he was sick as he was working on Bold Stars and it was Bold Stars that accompanied him on his many trips to the hospital as he studiously worked on the pages.”
“After a lifetime of building houses, he finally fulfilled his dream of drawing a comic book. I can tell you how happy he was working on it and finishing it.”
Bold Stars, published by Komikero Publishing and launched in October last year, was Alanguilan’s exploration and homage to the adult comics genre. Esmeña’s art gave the comics a richly Filipino texture.
Esmeña passed away at 5:30 this morning. He was 36 years old.
