Bamboo taxis arrive in Leyte

A new mode of transportation in Tabontabon, Leyte, has been commissioned by its mayor, Rustico Balderian.

Fastcompany.com reports that bamboo taxis, which are made up of 90% bamboo and run on biodiesel, are cheap transportation alternatives for townspeople, who often have the motorcycle as their main mode of transportation.

Balderian decided to come up with taxis that are "low-cost, fuel-efficient, safe, and environmentally-friendly." The ECO 1 taxi, covered in woven mat, can carry up to 20 people. The ECO 2, which has a sound system, can seat eight people. A third ECO taxi is set to be unveiled soon.

Tabontabon has a population of around 10,000 coming from 1,500 households. Ninety percent of the population depends on rice farming as their main source of income.
