More than two months after a dump truck on its way to a funeral in Cebu overturned and killed 10 people, a truck carrying wedding guests fell into a ravine in Mt. Province, injuring 38 people and killing five.
Philippine National Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr. said the accident occurred along Halsema Highway in Monamon Sur village, Bauko town, Mt. Province at 7:45 p.m. yesterday.
The elf truck was carrying 43 passengers, all from a wedding reception, when it fell into a 80-meter deep ravine.
The 38 injured passengers were brought to different hospitals in Baguio City, Benguet and Bauko town.
The truck driver Tomas Magadia had already surrendered and is currently detained at the Bauko Police station.
Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) regional police spokesperson Supt. Engelbert Soriano said they are still investigating the event.
According to Associated Press, the police will resume looking for other victims and their belongings after the heavy fog ceases. The reason for the accident has not yet been revealed. Though in other reports, the Provincial Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) said the driver supposedly lost control of the vehicle. PDRRMC added that it was raining and the highway was blanketed by heavy fog.
In August this year, the Department of Interior and Local Government issued a memo in Central Visayas prohibiting the use of dump-trucks and other open-type vehicles to transport people.
