Today Filipinos mark the death anniversary of Corazon Aquino, icon of democracy and first female president in Asia, who succumbed to colon cancer two years ago.
A mass will be held by her tomb this afternoon. Expected to attend are her son President Benigno Aquino III, family members, friends, and others.
“For the millions who we know love our former president, we can offer prayers, especially on her second death anniversary and continue keeping her example in their hearts and minds,” deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said.
The City of Manila will also be holding a commemorative program at the Ninoy-Cory Park along Burgos Street and Bonifacio Drive, as well as a wreath-laying with top government officials and representatives of the private sector and non-government organizations.
Cory Aquino, born on January 25, 1933, was hailed as Time Magazine's “Woman of the Year” in 1986 and cited as one of Asia's heores. She was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006, among other awards and achievements.
She was the widow of national icon Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., who was assasinated on 21 August 1983 at what is now the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. She assumed the presidency on 25 February 1986, the first president to win a snap election.
Her daughter, Kris Aquino, announced in March 2008 that Cory was diagnosed with colon cancer. Cory passed away on 1 August 2009 due to cardiorespiratory arrest following complications of the disease.
Millions of Filipinos, along with members of the international community, offered prayers and gathered in a funeral procession that went from Intamuros, Manila to her resting place in Manila Memorial Park.
In commemoration, Manila City Mayor Alfredo Lim today proclaimed August 1 as Corazon Aquino Day.
