Maverick director Brillante Mendoza’s latest film Lola won the Grand Knight Award at the 27th Miami International Film Festival held in Florida, USA last week.
“With the award comes a USD25,000 (P1.123 million) cash prize from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation,” said Ferdinand Lapuz, who produced the movie.
“Twelve [other] films competed in the category that celebrates the works of up-and-coming filmmakers from around the world,” he added. Lola competed against films from Russia, Brazil, China, Bolivia, and the Netherlands, among others.
According to the film festival’s website, Mendoza’s movie is "the daunting story of two elderly women implicated in a robbery-homicide involving their respective grandsons: one the victim, the other the accused.”
“Mendoza offers an earnest, compassionate study of forgiveness and redemption in the aftermath of an everyday killing in a poverty-stricken Filipino community," it adds.
The performance of veteran actress Anita Linda was also commended, with the film festival website deeming her a “Philippine cinema icon.” Linda performed alongside fellow long-time actress Rustica Carpio.
Lola has previously won Second Best Picture at last year’s Venice Film Festival last year and Best Film in Dubai. It is currently competing at the Fribourg International Film Festival in Switzerland, the Asian Film Award in Hong Kong and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival in Spain.
